Fly Fishing for Smallmouth

I should have asked this in the original post, but are most guys using a standard floating line or are a lot of you using sinking tip or full sinking line for targeting the bottom?

Floating line but I’ve only fished forth once and apparently something was wrong with the ones I was catching because they didn’t put up a fight like the ones the other guys are catching.

Here is a pic of my best smallie on a fly rod. This is a big river with a slow but strong current. I fished with a 4 weight euro rod throwing streamers from a size 10 jig streamers up to fully articulated streamers like a Sex Dungeon.

After this trip I bought an 8 weight to throw the bigger flies easier, but I don’t like it near as well. I’m back to fishing the 4 weight rod (more similar to a standard 6 weight) with a sinking line.

If I could get the fish to eat the fly I want, it would be a Swimmy Jimmie. It’s electric to watch that fly twist and dart before getting clobbered by a pissed off bass. However, a size 10 jig streamer catches a lot more fish for me.

That same size 10 streamer absolutely slams the bass in faster pocket water. Copper, black, and olive colors all work well.
