Idk if it's just me messing this up but I am trying to Fletch my own arrows and I am having a very hard time getting them to stick. I am cleaning all of the old glue off the shaft then cleaning them with 50% rubbing alcohol then cleaning the fletching with a new clean paper towel then using the bohning Fletch it platinum glue on bohning killer vanes.KIMG0211.JPGKIMG0213.JPG I am also using the bohning fletching jig as you can see in the picture. Is there something wrong with what I am doing or is it the sub par equipment? Any help is greatly appreciated

Less is more with fletching glue. Try one using less glue and wipe the vanes with the cleaner too

Ok thank you. I have been trying a little more because I have been putting a little on and it doesn't cover the whole thing so I just run the tip of the glue tube through to try and spread it out and they don't stick at all and now I have some coming out of the sides so I know that it too much I guess it's just a matter of finding the sweet spot?

I had trouble with that platinum glue. Any other gel super glue worked fine. I’d try something else.

Fletch-tite is great stuff. That’s all I use. You’ll be better off cleaning the shaft with acetone or a much purer alcohol. I also take either scotch-brite or 300 grit sandpaper and wrap it around the end of the shaft and rotate the shaft while sliding the abrasive up and down the shaft a few times gently, just the area to be fletched. This creates a cross hatch pattern that’ll help with adhesion. You might be able to see it a bit in the licture

Ok I did clean it with a scotch Brite pad but I will try some acetone on the next arrow thanks again

So my buddy had a cheap plastic jig and his kept falling off. So I went over and realized that he would glue it and let the clamp and magnet just hold the fletching. When he would let go and wait a minute before he pulled the clamp of that it was pulling away just enough that it wasnt fully bonding. Its confusing to explain but i basically had to hold everything tight for 20 sec or so until it bonded and then carfully pulled the clamp in one motion as to not let the clamp pull on the fletching. Try when you push the fletching onto the shaft hold it there with a little pressure until it bonds. Hope you figure it out.

switch glue, platinum works well for feathers but not so well for vanes anymore. Super gel should work or the AAE primer pen and glue will for sure. AAE's system is the best I have found so far..

I thought about this today too. I started letting it sit for a second or two to let the glue start setting up and then I would move the clamp up the Fletch and then pushing it down to help keep some down pressure on the fletching. I had one that I put too much glue on and it stuck to the clamp but it was still a bit of a pain to pull it off.

I was wondering if that wasn't an issue I got this one because it was what the local store had. I think I'll be ordering some aae stuff. And I plan on getting a bitz soon

After using a jig like that I switched to the bitzenberger. Much easier.

Second, consider wrapping your arrows. It makes for replacing or fixing vanes much easier. If you need to refletch entirely, simply boil the wrapped end, peel off the wrap and redo it. The wrapped shaft is much easier to work on with this method.

And gluing the plastic fletch to the plastic wrap works great with the gorilla super glue.

Use the 91% iso alcohol and blue lid gorilla glue. Scrape shaft clean. Wipe with alcohol on a paper towel. Put vane in clamp. Use q tip to apply alcohol to vane. Use light coat of glue to vane base. Apply vane to shaft and repeat. Then tip and tail each vane for longevity. This is a little redneck but I’m a cheap ass and have beat up targets so I pass though them often and my vanes take a beating but always stay on. I’ve used different vane companies and never had an issue, even the aae vanes. I’m sure that better ways are possible but until this fails me I’ll stick with it.

Is your platinum nice and smooth when it comes out of the tube or is is fairly smooth then stringy when you try to stop applying glue and pull the tip away from the vane? In my experience Platinum has a short shelf life and its even shorter once opened. I've stopped using it completely and either use the blue tip gorilla impact tough super glue or the AAE CA glue. Pretty much every time I have issues with fletching sticking it comes back to old or bad glue.

I don't use acetone, alcohol, or any other chemical to clean the shafts or vanes. I just scrape the old glue off, wipe with a dry towel, then super glue them and hold for 15-20 seconds. Never had any issues.

When I am applying it comes out smooth. Every once in a while the tip will gum up and I will have to clean that then I get a little bit of string but I was attributing that to the gummy tip.

Thanks I will try this method next time. I am letting the glue from these two arrows cure longer than one day this time.

I am gonna have to figure out how to afford more than a half dozen arrows. I broke one earlier so I am down to 5 arrows and since these two are OOC right now I am down to being able to shoot 3 at a time and that isn't enough shooting for me

3 is about all I shoot at a time, as I shoot groups at 40+. Just more exercise going back and forth. Try running, it speeds up the process and gets your heart rate going for closer to actual hunting conditions.

Yea that makes sense and I am shooting out to 60 but I also made myself a 4x4 target so I can shoot different spots. I really should start running back and forth tho, Ive been trying to figure out a way to get some extra weight off without actually running.

I press and hold a couple spots on the clamp for 10 seconds total or so. Wiping off excess that may come out. That pressure really ensures a solid connection
