Fixed Blade Broadheads VS Mechanicals

I shoot Afflictor EXT broadheads they’re fixed heads and cut on contact and they’re made with a 7075-T6 aircraft aluminum ferrule and stainless steel blades and they come with bleeders. The blades are fairly thick I’m not sure of the exact thickness but they have some serious meat to them. They flew just like my field points right out the box but my PSE DNA SP is well tuned so that result may vary user to user. Now to your question, you won’t ever get a right or wrong answer to this it comes down to user preference and it’s all situational based, mechanicals will open an animal up, give you devastating wound channels, and great blood trails (all depends on IF everything goes perfect and you make a great shot and as we all know it’s hunting anything can happen good or bad) now fixed blades can give you great wound channels, amazing penetration even bone breaking devastation, reusable (most the time), and are less prone to horrible deflections if hitting a small twig or some thick tall grass (depending on terrain you hunt) I ultimately went with a fixed because I like less moving parts and the possibility that if something goes wrong like I hit a twig and/or I deflect in a large bone I have the CHANCE to still harvest the animal I’m after. At the end of the day whey your pros and cons for what you’re looking for and get out and hunt that’s what really matters any head can kill any game (for the most part) what matters most is you practice a lot and put an ethical shot on the animal you’re after. Good luck!

Anyone shot kudus?
Yes
They are soft, bend and chip easily.
And when you send them in for the lifetime warranty the owner will call you and be a total dick and claim abuse.

So I asked when does the warranty apply, if I open the package and it falls apart.

Cause if you shoot it he claims abuse.

Kudu and kiss off imo.

I had the same experience, minus I never bothered with the warranty. They also are a pain to sharpen and don't come out of the box sharp enough for me. Whatever metal the bleeders are made of is super soft as well.

I'm also a Kudu user. I love the contour+, but also recognize that most all heads are not reusable. The likely hood of hitting something hard on a pass through is high and it will bend the tip. Out of the 3 bucks I've shot with them only 1 was reusable and resharpened and put back in the quiver. While they are more difficult then most to sharpen I don't mind it with the stay sharp jig.

I'm considering giving evolution a try this year, but I've really been satisfied with a single bevel as I know if I need to take a quartering to shot that my arrow will do it's job.

I understand everything has a trade off, and I don’t expect it to last forever. I just don’t understand advertising a lifetime warranty then having an attitude.

If he had been cordial I’d understand.

But he even sent the head back to the owner of the pro shop I got them at and said don’t sell this customer my product anymore.

I think they are soft enough they can bend the tip on entry if knicking a bone then the arrow will deflect and turn a corner inside the animal, instead of a pass through.

Just to un predictable of a head for me.

I swore off mechanicals for a number of years and I’m glad I did. I learned a lot about various fixed head designs/shot angles/etc. Shooting fixed blades for practice A LOT also improved my form for when it matters most. The last few years I have started using mechanicals again and have been pleased.

Turkeys - use a mechanical.

WT Deer - doesn’t matter what head they run a long ways on a single lung. With a good shot they all work and generally die within sight. Mechanicals I don’t expect a clean pass through on mature deer, but I used them because I can usually wait for a good shot angle and they will penetrate the entire body cavity. But they don’t guarantee a good blood trail like most ppl hope for. They similar to a bigger 3/4 blade fixed head on the shot angles that leave little blood (fixed 2 blades trail will suck on these shots).

Elk - if calling I plan on a frontal/quartering shot which I want a fixed head to ensure I have enough penetration and reduce odds of a deflection. I’m not a trophy elk hunter but a mature bull will be much larger than a rag/cow, so I want the extra penetration over the wider cut. They also appear a lot easier to kill than WT, so a smaller 2 blade is my go to. If I was stalking elk I would entertain a mechanical, but don’t know if there would be an advantage.

I've shot deer, bear, elk and turkeys web them. I think they are very underrated. They are super tough, easy to sharpen and not too expensive.

I like the thickness of the metal in the blades. For elk, I'm not a fan of blades that are built like razor blades. They can and generally are very effective. But I have seen blades break off heads like these when hitting deer bones. So I choose a more robust blade. Second, the razor blade type heads IME are super sharp but the edge isn't retained very well.

I want a blade that is still razor sharp after going through an animal.

Man that sucks! I've killed a few animals with mine and haven't had any issues. I also haven't called them for anything either. If I got some grief from them I would probably drop them too.

That owner is a D bag for doing that. That's just dumb business.

One bear I shot, the arrow went through both shoulder blades and the neck (spine). Head was still good after with the exception of needing to be sharpened.

We had a pretty good laugh at the archery shop about it.

Matter of fact I think they still have it in a display.🤣

And I’m not saying it wasn’t abuse.

He just gave me zero guidelines on when the warranty would apply.

That leads me to believe it’s a sales gimmick.

I just had some new SEVR 2.0 Hybrids show up at my door. I'll give them a go this year. But I also like my old Spitfires and GR Fatal Steel heads too........along with my Exodus fixed blade heads as well. I shot my bull moose with an Exodus quartering away and he ran about 30 yards and stopped. Then I hit him with a 125gr Fatal Steel double lung shot, that arrow buried up to the fletching on my 30" arrows but the BH never made it through the offside ribcage. He never took another step, he just fell over face first and was done. I'm shooting 500gr arrows at 290+ with my 32.5" draw.
