New to the forum. I'm interested in getting into some mountain hiking/stalking type hunting. I'm in Texas, so in-state would likely be the easiest for my first couple times, but eventually I'd like to expand up to NM, UT, WY and CO. When I google, I get all the outfitters and guide operations, but I'm really looking for things like gear lists, common shot distances, advantages to public vs private land, and if I use my std hunting license, or do I have to draw, guides who specialize in public land, etc... Maybe there's a TX mule deer youtuber I haven't found yet.

I mentioned mule deer, but I'd love to mix in elk, audad or other sheep, and whatever else might be an overlooked combo hunt.

I'm in the process of putting together a semi-custom Tikka carbon stalking rifle in 300wsm, and I've got a Bergara Carbon HMR in 6.5 Creedmoor to get started.

Thanks in advance.

I've hunted mule deer in the Trans-Pecos region for several years. These are leases/large ranches(10-15k acres). They are getting more expensive by the day!

Not much in the way of public land mule deer in Texas other than a handful of draws by TPWD. Very few tags and long odds but somebody has to win. There are two areas open to the public that allow mule deer hunting in Texas to my knowledge. Extremely tough hunts and crazy pressure. I personally would not waste my time, but I was fortunate enough to have a lease with mule deer for many years.

Plenty of outfitters in west TX for mulies, aoudad, and elk. Big $$
