First time Elk Colorado unit 14

Hey a buddy and myself are headed to Colorado this year for our first elk hunt. We are going to hunt unit 14 and was wondering if anyone else has hunted it before and if they may be willing to help a little. We are going to go for first rifle.

Not looking for anyone's honey hole unless you want to tell me, but what kind of terrain should we run across and how easy is it to get off the roads and trails.

We hope to get a scouting trip in this spring just so we can get some boots on the ground.

Very popular unit.
You gonna have company.
You can go deep as far as you want until you meet someone coming in from the other way.

BTW. That country is getting hammered with snow these days, so 'spring' maybe June or July

I was looking at the unit as well. Was thinking about hiking in around rabbit ears pass. Any tips for a newbie? Was thinking of going during Archery season.

North of steamboat, is lots of hunters. Lots of blowdowns from beatle kills. Lots of non hunters on trails from bikers hikers and fisherman. Just need to hike in a ways and get off trail.
