So, I’m a huge archery hunter, and where I hunt whitetails it’s shotgun only (I shoot a savage 20 gauge bolt) or muzzleloader. My brother and I are planning some future trips. First will be a rifle Muley hunt with elk, caribou, Coues, etc. to come.

After a bunch of research, I decided on a 308 Christensen Arms Mesa (I’m a lefty so I was a little limited). Was debating a Tikka too but by the time I did all the upgrades the CA has it’d be more money. Anyways now that I have the rifle coming I have some questions on optic/mount help.

For a lightweight backcountry rifle what scope do you recommend? Looking to be in the $400-$700 range. Right now I’m leaning towards a Vortex Razor HD LH 2-10x40. Also, does anyone have any experience with what height rings will fit with the 90 degree bolt throw on the Remington action. Can I get away with low? I’m think Talley’s are the way to go but my mind isn’t set yet.

Thanks!

I'm not sure what your definition of lightweight is but I can't reccomend SWFA enough if you're going to be spinning unless you jump up into the thousands for a budget.

if you're sticking with a set-and-forget scope with a 40mm bell and 1" tube, talley lows work fine for all my rifles.

FWIW - Folks on here have varying reports of talley's failing. I'm sure they're true but I've never had an issue, even in magnums.

I don't have the exact scope you're interested but my Rem700 as Low Talley rings for my 3.5-10x40 Leupold VX3i and there is plenty of room

Gonna go with a set and forget BDC reticle. Not going to shoot far enough to warrant turrets... yet. Trying to stay under a pound so the SWFA might be out, unless there is one I’ve missed.

Good to know with the low tings though. That’s should work for me.

I have the vortex 1.5-8x on a Winchester in 308 with the Talley low light weights. It’s the same as the 2-10x except the front objective is a little smaller.

Great optic. The reticle is very well thought out. Very precise center dot but if things are close I can snap shoot quickly with those bigger lines.

I went with the lower power as they are discontinued and are on sale at amazon for $500 bucks. However I’d say go with the 2-10 if you value the extra little bit of light gathering with the slightly bigger front objective.

Medium talleys would definitely fit but I’m happy with the low setup as it’s as low possible with plenty of bolt clearance. In fact I think I would actually loose bolt clearance with mediums.

With a skinny barrel I don’t see why low’s won’t work with the slightly larger front objective. I’ll try to get a pic when I get home in an hour.

That’d be great. Thanks! I found the 2-10 on eBay for $550. Prob gonna do that unless I get pushed in another direction here.

Front bell isn’t an issue.

Lots of space for the bolt too.

Also if you need more cheek height look up Rob Lowe Leather. I got him to make me a saddle based on my measurements. Only weighs 3 ounces which is better than those nylon stock packs that are more than 6 ounces.

That leather saddle cheek weld looks nice. I’ll check that out. Thanks for the help.
