So I want to buy a new scope, rifle. The rifle will be a 6.5 prc. So I want something I can shoot some distance with. Pretty much was going to buy a night force, then started reading about first plane second plane stuff and now I am confused. Most of the night force scopes are second plane. But seems as though first plane is better. So then I was going to get the SHV first, but it only goes to 14 power, is that plenty or are you guys shooting 20+ ? Even the more expensive ones, the majority are second plane. Just seems as though with first plane, it don’t matter what power your at, hold old over marks are correct ( once figured out). So iam So confused about what to get, any one help recommend a scope ? Or what you use ?

Nightforce makes tons of FFP models. Really they only ones that aren’t available FFP are some of the NXS’s. Pretty much every model of ATACR you can get FFP and all the NX8’s are only FFP.

If you're using turrets to dial in your distance it doesn't matter, but if you're using a ballistic reticle it does. I got second plane because even if I'm using a ballistic reticle I'll most likely be at maximum power if I need to make a long shot.

I've got a 3-15. Don't see a use for any higher magnification for hunting. I found that even using a 3-9 was fine at 500 yards.

I’m running an ATACR and an NXS in sfp on my distance guns. Maximum magnification I dial to is 16x out to 1k.

One downside to FFP is at low magnification the crosshairs are very small. And at higher magnification the crosshairs are big. SFP the crosshairs stay the same size regardless of magnification

First plane is really only beneficial if you want to range your target with the reticle. I much prefer second since I have a rangefinder.

I you are shooting matches and doing ranging with reticle FFP.
Hunting SFP just make sure cap and reticle are same MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA

Go with ffp imo. That’s what my boys use on their rifles.

Kinda what I am thinking, I am not trying to be some long range expert. Nor do I plan on shooting at an animal at long distance. Just a casual outing here and there where it would be nice to stretch its legs. I do want to be able to beat the two guys that think they great long distance shots that I hang with. They think they are great if they can hit the steel plate at 400 yards, one out of six shots. I am a bow hunter at hart.
