First Montana hunt

I’m looking to go on my first backpack hunt. I live in Michigan and have been out west several times. Mostly wall tent or staying in town. A couple buddy’s and I are looking to do our first backpack hunt. We have never hunted Montana and would like to check that off our list as well. We’re looking to do a rifle hunt for elk or mule deer or both. We are putting in for points this year and want to go next year.

I’m looking for direction on areas to look at. I have been spending time looking at onX and Montana’s website trying to find an area that would work. We’re not comfortable hunting in grizzly country just yet. I’m not looking for exact spots just hoping for a little insight on areas to look. I like reasearching but at times suffer from paralysis by analysis.

Any insight would be appreciated
Thanks
Donald

Look at the grizzly bear density maps first, then look at the elk density map. This will give you a good starting point. All of this is on Montana fwp website.

With a rifle I wouldn't hesitate to go into grizz country. I did a solo hunt with a bow in grizz country a few years back. I did bring a 10mm pistol. And admittedly I did not sleep as well as I would have liked. But I would have slept better with a rifle and a buddy or 2.
