This past year I upgraded my hunting apparel to the First Lite clothing system. I'm going to document my thoughts in a series of reports as the seasons and hunting locations change as I had some difficulty locating gear reports and the type of hunting that was associated with the report. My intent is to provide a gear review and type of hunting/conditions to aid other hunters in deciding on which pieces of clothing to purchase. What else to do while sitting in Minneapolis airport with a long layover after a good week of hunting in NODAK. On to the first report, although rather limited.

Hunting style: Tree stand hunting, both fixed and climbing. Walking distance less than a quarter mile.

Weather conditions: Alabama archery in the southern zone is usually warm and these days were no different with temps from 45 - 70 degrees and humid conditions on Oct 25, 30-31. Winds were very light with clear conditions.

First Lite products used: Kanab 2.0 ASAT, Llano and Chama long sleeve zip in ASAT, allegheny bottoms, red desert boxers, balaclava in ASAT and the merino gloves in dry earth.

The usual warm and humid conditions make it tough, especially if the mosquito's are out in full force. Thankfully it's been a dry fall and they were tolerable.

The kanab 2.0 and merino top layers, balaclava and gloves were very comfortable and dried quickly after walking into/ setting up climbing stands. In the cooler mornings the wool kept me comfortable. The warm afternoon conditions ended up being sweaty hunts and as evening approached and with the wool drying I was comfortable and didn't chill as the sun went down and the temperature quickly dropped. In the cool mornings I layered the allegheny bottoms with the Kanab 2.0 and the two merino tops. In the afternoon, it was the Kanab and the Llano QZ. Overall, very pleased with these First Lite products and this was my first experience wearing merino base layers. I washed the merino pieces and hung them to dry, they retained the same size and shape after drying.

I will be hunting Alabama until the season closes on 10 Feb and will most likely add another review at the end of the season as the weather will vary from the 70's to the 20's. Next gear review will be from a week of hunting in NODAK with the North Branch and Sanctuary pieces.

As a Midwest tree stand hunter and a First Lite user, I look forward to your review.

I too have been wearing the kanab 2.0s and I also spend a good bit of time in a treestand. For the most part, the pants fit great and the construction/cut seem like there was a lot of thought that went into it them. I absolutely love the deep front pockets, excellent marks for that, but I hate the front thigh cargo pockets. The placement of those cargo pockets just doesn't make any sense to me. The pants, for being so thin, do seem to be fairly warm and they dry pretty quickly. The elastic waist/butt area and crotch are comfortable and make wearing the pants a pleasure but they definitely give me concerns over durability and longevity.

I definately won't be wearing the Kanabs through the nasty stuff as I'm sure they will shred or tear but I'm not sure they were designed for bushwacking. Heck, most everything I have gets tore up to some degree going through the thick stuff in 'Bama!

UPDATE:

After nearly a full season of heavy use and abuse I have to say the Kanabs did not perform. The areas in the crotch are separating where the merino meets the stretch fabric. Additionally, briars and contact with brush has pulled many, many threads and fibers. I do no foresee the pants making it until next season.

I give these pants out at least an 8/10 in every category except durability. The durability is a soft 2.

Great pants but they absolutely will not stand up to heavy use.

Sounds like you should have bought the Corrugate pant. Much more durable from what I understand.
