Hey guys, thought I'd share my first whitetail buck story. We were hunting a piece of state land in central Montana that borders private property. The landowner is known to drive around and scare deer off state land to his property. He's called the warden on my friend for trespassing just to harass him (he was on state the whole time). He also padlocks fences on state land access points. So with the odds not in our favor we took a chance to go hunt it.
After busting a morning spot overlooking a river bottom, we moved to the coulees and fields about a mile away. We were about 2 miles from the truck and saw a herd of mulie does but no bucks. We were just bs'ing on the road when we spot two deer in the field about 1000 yards away. We glassed them from a distance and saw it was a whitetail buck chasing a doe in estrus.
We watched them for a little contemplating to make a move on them while they were roaming around or put them to bed. We opted to bed them down at 10:30 am and made our stalk. Wind was horrible but loud enough to cover our noise. We got perpendicular to the wind direction and got within 40 yards of this bedded buck in the willow thickets. I shot him in his bed and he ran off about 200 yards. I got prone again and shot him when he stopped running since his shoulder was now completely mangled. It was pretty fun to close the distance from a 1000 yards down to 40!
Took some pics and field dressed him gutless style. Pretty excited for my first buck ever!
My friend's buck he shot a week before
Thanks for reading!
