I’m heading to MT for my first archery elk hunt. Looking for advice/pointers for solo hunting.

Hunt uphill, pack downhill. If you dive into a nasty hole after a bugle, just remember that you will have to climb out with meat on your back. It is easy to get caught up in the moment and loose track of just how far you are from the road. Know your limits.

Much of it will be challenging mentally stay positive, have fun and keep moving until into elk...much of elk country can be empty of elk so cover ground👍Good luck

Go on some solo pack trips prior to the actual hunt to get kinks in your gear system worked out ahead of time. I’ve seen guys make it all the way back in several miles just to get hit with a storm and find out they weren’t properly prepared.

I don't remember telling you about my first elk hunt. Exactly what happened to me. I tried skimping on quality gear and got froze out.

All good advice so far. Having the right gear and being mentally tough are at the top of my list. Doing your homework on whatever unit you are hunting is next. Having the right gear means you have what you need, not much more, and you are proficient with it. You don’t want to be learning how to use your system to boil water in the dark while it is snowing. Being mentally tough means persevering through the entire hunt. Stuff happens, especially in the backcountry. Being mentally tough enough to overcome blown stocks/calling sequences and try again is hard for some folks. The best way to become successful is to learn from your failures. You have to have encounters to learn. Know your unit as best as you can and don’t half ass it. Hard work pays off.

Appreciate the feed back. What should I look for in camp sites? I don’t want to blow out game at night

Thermals are usually going down the mountain in the morning and as it warms up will start to switch and go up the mountain. Helps to know where the elk are or where you think they will be when setting up camp. Don't wanna be setup above them and try to hunt against the thermals.

My advice would be to get The PlayBook and put your hands, eyes and ears on all things Elknut! The learning curve will be cut way down ;)

I’ve signed up for the Elk101 course but heard the elknut on the richoutdoors podcast. Is his app/course worth it? I feel there are a lot of these courses out there.

All things Elknut are well worth the small amount paid. You can't put a price on a great education ;)
