I am looking to buy a nice first aide kit for my truck. I would like something to cover camping but also help at a crash. I was looking at the adventure medical kits. Either the bighorn or the grizzle. They seem to be very expensive for what you get. I am trained to the first responder level (40 Hrs). Dose anyone know of a better per made kit for around 100 dollars I could also supplement what is in the kits. Thanks Greg

Greg,

Like you, I think that the pre-made first aid/emergency kits have stuff in there you don't need and that is just there to boost the item count. The AMK products are a good starting point though if you pick the small to medium sized kits.

What I have done, since I wanted to make more than one kit (pack, car, some for the kids, etc.) was to buy containers for each kit I wanted to make, then I went out and bought bandaids, antibiotic creme, motrin, immodium, zerteck, alchohol prep pads, etc. for the general first aid part and repackaged them in snack or sandwich sized zip lock baggies. I then supplemented it with 4x4's, gauze, tape, etc. for wounds in another baggie. I found a good deal on some compression bandages and some tourniquets to complete the trauma components. I put the desired mix of components in each container and I was done; one for the vehicle, an individual kits for myself and my kids.

Check out your local craft store. They have these mini ziploc bags for beads and other crafty stuff but they work great for portioning pills and such.

I have the Red Cross "Deluxe Family" premade kit in my cars. There might be a little fluff in them but since they aren't that expensive it is a good base to work from if you decide to add a few other items. They are only about $25 each and the last time I took a Red Cross class they training book had a 10% coupon in the it. You might be able to find a discount code online.
