Got a cousin who was scouting up the Steese, said he and everyone else up there had to leave because of fires close to the highway.

ADF&G on the other hand reported that there are caribou near the road and they are going to close the season over the weekend.

Anybody got any more intel on what is what up there? Anybody else making a similar go/no-go decision right now?

Central Alaska has a multitude of fires so you can expect smoke blowing in from a multitude of directions.

I hunt the 40 Mile but I won't hunt the Steese.

ADFG has a 4 day season opening planned for that area.

air quality around Fairbanks right now is caustic and <2 miles viz. Steese the same at least to the white mountains.
