My brother recently sold a hunting rifle and shipped it to the buyer via UPS. He shipped it from Utah to Alabama. It cost him about $82!!!!

That just seems outrageous to me. What are you guys being charged for shipping typically? Is Fed Ex any better than UPS?

Thanks!

My FFL charges between $30 and $40 depending on who’s working. I’ve shipped 5 rifles over the last couple years

Did they charge him a transfer fee in addition to shipping?

Seems a bit steep. I was recently charged $50 shipping for a rifle delivered via fedex.

Just last week I paid $43 to send some binoculars via FedEx. That was their cheapest rate!

I just sent one via usps last week. Cost me $62 with $2000 insurance. The insurance was basically half of the cost. Had it in a big pelican case so wasn't small or light. I thought it was a decent deal

I shipped a Kimber handgun back to the factory for repairs, so no FFL was required, but it had to be shipped overnight due to regulations on handgun shipping. With overnight shipping and insurance for an $1100 handgun, cost me $200. Good thing was Kimber shipped it back to me on their dime.

I shipped a rifle via UPS from Georgia to Wyoming. It was in the original cardboard and styrofoam box and weighed 12 lbs. billable. The total bill was ~$87 - $29 ground, $38 "service options" and ~$21 for "additional handling". I insured it, so one of the latter two charges is for that extra.

T'is I for which he speaks...
12.35 lbs actual weight...
22.00 lbs billable weight...
50x14x5" dimensions...
$700 insured...

Charges:
$53.70 Ground Commercial
$8.05 Service Options
$20.50 Additional Handling
$82.25 Total

One of those last 2 charges is insurance (not sure). What I am sure of is that the 3 service agents at the main shipping hub were all new and completely inept.

I wonder how many people omit that they are in fact shipping a firearm. Instead they say "parts" or something like that. Good luck with the insurance covering that!

Depends on how you are doing it. USPS now charges over fees if your box is over certain dimensions. It cost me $55 to ship a sBL from my town to my new town. The measurements were less than 2cuft but the length was longer than 21”. It cost me $15 extra.

If you have an account with usps you can save some money.

I bought a rifle off gunbroker in November and he shipped it ups ground. It was still $120 from Louisiana to my FFL in Alaska
