I take cotton gun cleaning patches and dip them in wax. These work great for starting a fire under regular condition. Then I keep a few trioxane tablets throughout my gear for wet or emergency conditions. Haven't had a time where the trioxane couldn't get it done.

Cotton balls in Vaseline. Cheap, light, burns a long time. I've used other stuff, but never had a reason to change.

I use a striker and the Vaseline cotton balls, but the comment about dryer lint is spot-on. That stuff is nuclear. But wet, it's just as wet as anything else. I like the cotton ball method. Just make sure you run a thread or piece of wire under it or you can't get it out of the tube or film canister.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet but instead of "pre-mixing" cotton balls and Vaseline, keep a bit of Neosporin seperate so you can use it to treat cuts and then mix with cotton balls as necessary for a fire starter.

^^^ similar to what I do except with Chapstick. I also try it at home first, some brands burn better. Also tp could be covered.

It sounds like Vaseline and cotton balls are the old stand-by, but the Trioxane is what you go to for extremely wet conditions. I am probably going to start packing both. I am not ready to start packing around a flare.

Where do you buy your Trioxane from?

Amazon, rei, surplus stores.

Johnnyringo- if you want some more grrrr add magnesium filings (not magnesium chloride, metal filings or shavings) to the cotton Vaseline mixture. It will burn white hot. Be careful as it increases the odds of the TSA taking your tinder and of burning yourself.

Dryer lint is a great cheap way to get a fire going, and I will keep a small zip lock bag of it n in my fire kit . My failsafe is usually an Esbit tablet or Trioxaine.
