Finally got my first elk

Yesterday morning. Opening day of rifle in Montana. I got nestled into a spot I had scouted some last year. Lots of sign everywhere.

I had only been sitting about 5 minutes when some cows and a spike came up the ridge in front of me. They were about 60 yards away. They stopped briefly then moved on, but they kept looking behind them. Then the bull came up the ridge two minutes later. He stopped broadside at 60 yards and my 300 WSM dropped him in his tracks.

This was my 6th elk hunt. He’s not a monster, but I couldn’t care less. He’s gonna feed my family and it feels good to finally go home successful!

All the long range target practice and it came down to a 60 yard free hand shot 😂

Very nice Tex, and congrats.

Funny, I pulled away from rifle hunting and started focusing on archery elk a few years back. I was often getting my rifle elk at short ranges, figured bow season should be easy with a full month.

Have not had elk meat since.

Awesome! Delish!

Awesome! Congrats! Such a great feeling! I remember my first and look forward to going after them again next week! Thanks for sharing. Gets me fired-up!!!

Great bull! Letting that spike go made all of the difference, and sometimes that isn't easy when the freezer needs meat.
Patience quickly rewarded!

Congrats!
I know what you mean I probably shot close to 200 rds practicing long range over the summer...my elk kill shot this year was 105yds from a knee...

CONGRATS! Basically had same thing happen on my first. I literally shot over 400 rds practicing out to 400 yards, opening morning at 9.00 am he stepped out broadside at 45yards. 300 win mag went to work...
