After nearly a year of searching for the right used Tundra Double Cab Limited (2014-2018), I finally found THE one and bought it! It is a used vehicle buyer's dream, the proverbial "old man's truck." It's a 2015 Limited with only 49k miles on it. Was owned for the last 7 years by an elderly gentleman who passed away in March at the age of 86. He lived out in a midwest farmland area and pretty much only drove it into town a couple times a week or so. It's super clean. The passenger and rear leather seats look like they haven't been sat in. Maybe best of all, I got it for $29k, which was a very good price for what I'd seen in my search. I plan on keeping it for at least a dozen years and it very well might be the last truck I buy (i'm an old guy!)

One thing, it will need new tires in less than a year. I anticipate that the truck's use will probably be no more than 10k miles/year, distributed roughly as 75% city, 20% highway, and 5% off pavement. I don't want pure street/radial tires that wouldn't be very useful off pavement but I don't need something with big tread lugs either. I don't want to spend a fortune but I do want something that will provide good tread life.

So, what do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance.

Wildpeak AT4W's have been fantastic for me. 30k on them and wearing nicely. A little road noise compared to a street truck tire but only noticeable if the radio is off. Great snow performance last winter, about what I'd expect in muddy conditions (that's what momentum is for).

Did you have the AT3Ws before? Curious how they compare as they’re basically an entirely different tire now.

I’d recommend falken wildpeak AT4 or BFG KO3. I’ve ran both on several trucks and can’t say enough good about them.

Kuhmo Crugen 51 is a clone of Michelin Defender M+S. My kids have them and they are nice. I just buy the Michelins.
Toyota tech here. Not knocking Kumhos or any non copied tire, but I do see a lot of those that are difficult to balance or don’t balance very well ever. Definitely see less QC issues with Michelin, BFG, Falken, and Toyo.

White double cab Tundra buddy! Have 40k on a set of cooper AT3 XLTs and no complaints. They’ve got a couple different levels of tread aggressiveness on otherwise similar tires. From highway tire to my full AT. Considering stepping up a size next go round and if I do it will be the Falken Wildpeak AT4s already mentioned as the coopers aren’t available. My wife’s 4runner is at the end of a set of Toyo Open Country AT3s that have worn beautifully. Usually a lighter and less expensive tire.

I didn't. I've had BFG KO2's (did not like), Goodyear Duratracs (liked), and Toyo Open Country (decent). I like the AT4W's better than any of those. This video below was helpful because I got the AT4W's right after they came out. Keeping the snow performance while beefing up the sidewall ply were my main two reasons for going with them.

I'm on my 2nd set of WP AT3Ws. They are an excellent tire. I used them in 18" of snow and in the desert on some gnarly terrain and I've never had a problem.

Mine are P rated, but they have an extra sidewall ply which makes them decent for off roading in the desert.

Once these wear out, I'll go with the AT4W simply because the 3Ws were so good.

The only negative is I did not get a lot of miles out of my first set....maybe 35k miles, but that's not an issue as they still last ~6 years.

Good luck,

Eddie

Nice find. Personally, I’d find some 18” rims too but that’s me.

Falken WP are good, Cooper Strongholds are as well
Agree. 17” or 18” rims are my preference.

The Toyo AT3 has been great on my ‘16 Tundra. They’ve worn well, stayed round and balanced. I’ll probably replace them with the same next summer. Unless I go with something more aggressive, like the new RT Pro, but it soudns like the OP doesn’t want that luggy a tire.

I put a lot of miles on, so have tried many over the years. Toyo Open Country tires are on my 4Runner and Tundra. Rotate them every 5k and I get great life. Over 45k on the set on my Tundra and going strong.

Found my old man Tundra a few months back, similar story, only had 6k miles on it. I put Cooper Strongholds on, love em so far.

I had great luck with a set of terra grappler g2’s on my 2012 crewmax. I got 75k out of them and they balanced well and wore evenly. I did not like the recon grapplers. They were slick in the rain and wore goofy. Now have a set of Toyo open country at3 and have been pretty happy with them but had some balancing issues at first

Ive had a few sets of Copper AT3 I really liked but they did leave something to be desired in muddy conditions. They ride well and have long tread life though (60-70k on two different set on a 1500 z71). This go round I went with Copper Discover ST Maxx and they have been great. I only have about 15k on them, but they do appear to be holding up well and I have been in a few situations they got me out of that the AT3 would not have.

Great find! I went down this rabbit hole about six months ago. I agree that 18” rims make a huge difference. I was going with falken to begin with but couldn’t get them in time and went with BFG K03. Love them so far.

Also, upgrading the suspension was a big plus. I didn’t do a lift but added the eibach suspension which leveled out the truck. Great ride and big improvement on the look.

Michelin LTX A/T2 are a great tire, very smooth, quiet, good mileage and good traction. They are on my '02 Chevy 2500HD and have about 50K on them.

I have the ATIII on right now too. Good tread. Weak sidewall. I’ll be going to something different next time.
