FFP vs SFP and Magnification Need. Western Hunting Scope

Razor LHT 3-15. Great illumination, great reticle, great glass, use the turret or reticle for long shots, great tracking (i have 5 of them and they've been 100%), lightweight, and great mag range for hunting.
Forgot great warranty

Accupoint in 3-9x40. Self adjusting illumination with no battery to die.
Duplex or mil-dot reticle of your preference. I prefer the amber dot.

This is an honest question, but why the yellow dot? I like the red triangle on my ACOG, but Trijicon doesn’t offer the Accupoint Mil-Dot in Red. I have been trying to figure out Amber versus Green. I was leaning towards Green, but I would love to hear the argument for Amber. Or the scenario in which you find it better. Thank you.

I think what cartridge you are shooting carries some weight in your decision matrix. Here is where i ended up after starting out where you are. I’m shooting a 280ai 143 hh bullet. Zeroed @ 200 yards I’m roughly -5” @ 300 yards, -10”@ 350, and -16”@400. Currently I’ve been using a Tract 2-10x44 with the bdc reticle and the tall turret install to dial rather than hold over. It’s a little thick for my taste but works ok. Here is the thing: for holdovers the reticle does ok for 300 yards, 400 yards etc @ 10x which is too high for those yardages . but if your shot is @ 365 on a lower magnification you are just guessing your holdover amounts. The reticle is too clumsy for those shots. It would take a lot of practice and memorization to be truly accurate with it. Over 400 yards same thing. If you are ok guessing or estimating the in between holdovers it’s fine but not optimal. I came to the conclusion that wasn’t accurate enough in field conditions for me and have moved on the swfa 3-9 ffp. No guesswork on a holdover @ lower power. So where I have arrived is for shots to 300 I can holdover efficiently and accurately and shots beyond that I have a dope chart taped to my stock for dialing anything beyond that. Dialing is much more efficient and mistake free than holdovers. While hunting I periodically check yardages and go over my dope so it’s ingrained. For me sfp is fine to 300 but beyond that too inefficient.

I don’t know why anyone would use a sfp over a ffp scope. If you are that worried about the added weight and since your not taking long shots, maybe consider open sights and really get a savings on the weight.

You use a SFP, because either you aren’t shooting past 300 yards, or you are dialing so you aren’t worried about reticle hash marks. Most hunters would do just fine with SFP

If you feel the need for high magnification (which is unnecessary for your stated limitations of 400yds) you definitely want FFP so you can dial it back and still use the subtensions. Just make sure it’s also usable at the low end as very few are.

For your use case, a SFP and 3-9/10x is also perfectly adequate.
I agree that the reticle on an FFP is compromised at lower magnification.
I strongly advocate for SFP on a hunting scope as the reticle is much more visible at lower mag.

Not all FFP reticles are bad at low power.

And a SFP is not necessarily always the best scope for hunting. In fact, a high magnification SFP scope is downright BAD for hunting!

Seems to bleed out less and be more subtle in contrast...doesn't overwhelm the reticle even if you have the outward adjustment open a bit much on a bright date and forget to turn it down. 99.5% of the time, I leave that adjustment turned down and the tritium adjusts brightness itself.

No you're not. They're already sold out again. They had a ton of backorders to fill and if you didn't jump on it fast, you're out of luck. Have to wait for the next shipment.
