I'm thinking of buying loaded 7mm WSM ammo to pull down and there is plenty of Federal Fusion around. Has anyone loaded with Federal WSM brass ? How did it hold the primer pockets ? Weight consistency ?

I see the lack of WSM brass isn't just an Australian problem!

I use once fired federal 300 WSM brass and find it excellent. I did weigh the cases once and found them pretty close but I can't find the paper that I wrote it down on. I don't think you will have any problems with it.

Cheers,

Last week a friend of mine was telling me that he was only able to get one or two reloads out of once fired brass due to the pockets not holding the primers in his .300wsm.

This is what I'm afraid of. I know the Winchester brass is tough but most Federal brass is notoriously soft. If I end up buying loaded ammo I guess I'll bite the bullet and pay another $5 a box for Winchester that I know will hold up.

Hey Shrek, my first foray into reloading last month was with Federal Premium Factory Nickel plated 300 WSM brass. I reloaded the once fired brass, and I actually had a primer fall out while chambering a round (WLRM primer). I started a thread about it on another forum, and a lot of guys chimed in saying that the 300 WSM federal brass is not the greatest, and in particular they have big primer pockets.

I have since switched to Norma brass and have not had any issues.

I have three loads into some 7 WSM Federal brass with no issues. I have heard of problems with the 300 WSM primer pockets and was tempted to try annealing the stuff I have but didn't... yet. I picked up a box of loaded Winchester super x the other day for $34 and plan on adding that into the mix. I have enough other projects that I figure a box of loaded Winchester now and then will let me phase out the Federal before I have problems with it.

I have found the federal brass to be really soft and I'm not a big fan of it. I've found Norma brass to be soft also and for the price I choose to pass on it. I've used quite a bit of Winchester 300 WSM loaded ammo that I bought and pulled the bullets to create 7mm wsm brass and it's worked great. With that said I see boxes of loaded Winchester 7mm WSM on the shelves and grab a box or two every time I go through the store, since about the first part of February.
