Favorite Chaps/Pants for Snowy Cattails?

I spend a lot of time chasing pheasants in the snow which means I beat the shit out of the cattails with my golden. Anyone have any recommendations for a high quality waterproof chap or upland pant? I have a pair of browning and Carharts that I like and wear every time out, but I do get wet once the snow flies. I’ve learned to just live with it.

I run hot, could be -50 during pheasant hunting and I won’t get cold. But it absolutely drives me nuts how my pants get wet and then I do get a bit cold going between spots. Not to mention the annoying wet feeling all day, I don’t deal with a ton of briars in the cattails, so it doesn’t need to be burr proof necessarily. A few stickers at the end of the day doesn’t bother me.

I’m fine with my early season pants when there’s no snow. But when I’m beating cattails in 10 inches of snow all day what have you found that you like? I have no limit on budget, buy once and cry once.

My choice as well. Keep them waxed up and they work great.

Tin cloth will out last you. The single Tin chaps are plenty heavy enough for and cattails or briers.

I really like the Dan’s chaps. I think they are mainly sold for hound hunting but I’ve used them bird hunting for years

Another vote for single layer Filson tins. My only complaint is the lack of zipper so taking your boots off to put on and take off is annoying. The double tins have a zipper or at least they used to if I remember right but the singles are plenty of protection. I’ve had mine for years beating them through manzanita, yuccas and sage and they still look like I e only used them for about a week. My buddy got a pair of Boyd’s made of a similar waxed canvas material and they seem to do well for him. They have full length zippers which I envy, but I will never wear mine out so I guess I’ll just keep taking my boots off.

I’ve been wanting to try those, might be cold without thermals so I’d size accordingly. They’d be the same tough material though. I thought the Boyd’s looked good too and had full length zippers if they’re available they’d be a good pick too.

I have been trying to kill a pair of double tin pants since the early 2000's. The single tin chaps are plenty for all but the nastiest stuff.

The Dan's look interesting, 50 bucks seems like a pretty good price on them. I'd only be wearing them in the snow and cold. I pulled the trigger on some five star chaps, will have a couple weeks to try them out. If they're crap I'll just upgrade next year, but it's worth a shot; especially with it made in the USA.

I don't have a problem getting cold when hunting pheasants so I use KUIU Yukon Gaiters and my normal light weight hunting pants. Hunt Dec and Jan for pheasants in SD using this setup. Will add long underwear when it gets below zero. I hunt a mixture of cattails and grass lands.

I wear gaiters early sesaon when it is nice. They are useless if it is raining, or more typical of SD, day long misty consditions. Tall, wet grass, gaiters aren't much good.

In the late season, Dec and Jan, we have not seen rain or mist but we have seen a lot of snow. Most of it blowing sideways and filling the cattails and grass sloughs. In those condition tall gaiters work great.
