Favorite/best headlamp?

I’ve owned several BD headlamps. They’re the reason I went on the hunt for something better. It’s beyond me that the storm 400 consistently makes the “best headlamps” or top gear lists. Maybe if you’re an average backpacker who only has one for emergencies or setting up a camp in the dark it’d be fine. But for serious use there’s WAY better options

Digging up an old thread,,,
In the market and am wondering if you still feel this way about the Black Diamond headlamps?
Thanks.
They're a good headlamp, but when you move into a rechargeable lithium type, your run time goes waaaay up. I have a fenix that uses the 14500 size battery. My only reason to upgrade would be to go to a headlamp that uses an 18650 since I have a lot of those already

So true. All my lights that take alkaline batteries are in my kids rooms on shadow puppet duty.

The lights i use the most are:
Nitecore NU25 - 1.6 ounces always have this with me as a backup if nothing else
Fenix hm50rv2 - 2.75 ounces and takes a cr123, same battery as my range finder and flextail pump I use sometimes
various 77 outdoor/sofirn d25 lights- these are 18650 lights in the same form factor as a peax duo in the 4.5 ounce range
Acebeam h30- 21700, bright light runtime beast, 6.5 ounces can use it as a power bank also

I just pick from those based on weight, lumens, and runtime requirements when I leave the house and bring a few spare batteries.

Thread is full of good suggestions. Fenix HM 65R for me. Magnesium body; lightweight, batteries last forever, rechargeable, crazy bright when you need it, good wash light for around camp

I’m reading the description on there site, it looks like you can hold the on button for .5 seconds and the light will come on?
You don’t have to cycle through the modes to get to the one you want? It returns to the last one used? Thanks.

The one I’ve got is called the “HM 65R Superraptor” it’s an optimized version made for the European market. Used to be able to get them shipped to the US, not sure anymore. All that to say, some of the details you’re asking about may be different on my exact sub model. On mine, there’s dedicated switch buttons for each lens. The light will remember its last brightness setting. Lamp is locked/unlocked by holding both buttons down for 3 seconds or so.

Another +1 for the Fenix range with 18650 batteries. Durable and bright

The brightest one I’ve ever used was just a rechargeable one off Amazon for $20. Still using it 5 years later and I bet I can see 200 yards with it on. Love it for duck hunting or driving to the stand when the 4 wheeler headlights don’t wanna work.

I love the Fenix HM50R V2. FYI, the Fenix batteries are 700mAh, but Nitecore has them that are 900mAh, so you can get some extra run time. I carry one battery in the light, and two fully charged in my pack so I can hot swap on the go if I need a lot of runtime. I carry a BD Spot as a backup in my pack.

The sofirns are great for the money. They are cheaper on their website just make sure you get the ones that ship from the US. They have the best red light I’ve used in a head lamp

Generally, I start with Nitecore for all my lighting. They are amazing. My headlamps from them are NU17 for just enough light and super lightweight. I also like the nu30 for more light and good weight. The NU43 is great, but heavy.

All the positive posts about Sofirn in this thread have caught my interest. Can anyone confirm for me the weight (battery inculded) of the Sofirn H25 LR (D25 LR)?
Thanks.

Princeton Tec Remix Pro has been my headlamp for more than 5 years. Only problem was the battery hatch broke. Called the company and a replacement hatch was mailed the same day. American made company.
I have bought the Vizz RGB. Not the same battery hatch, so I expect a long life on this light. I carry a zebra light as a backup.

I’ve replied to this thread already, but to beat the dead horse ANYONE looking for a decent headlamp would be silly not to add a Sofirn or two to their lineup. For the price it’s crazy not to. If so inclined, adding a fenix or nitecore, zebra, peax, ect is also a great idea and for some might bring peace of mind knowing they spent more money. But I’ve used the crap out of my cheap sofirn/77outdoor headlamps and am just fine ending my headlamp search there. If it wasn’t for this sight I wouldn’t even know they existed. Happy that I do.
