Is anyone running a fast twist 25-06?
The 25-06 has hands down been my favorite rifle and I'm getting the itch to do a build with a fast twist barrel to throw the blackjacks or new 133/135 Bergers.

Any advice on a build would be appreciated.

I looked into it last winter and was really tempted to do it but ended up building a 7 saum first. The ballistics of those heavies are fantastic and it would be a dream to shoot all day on the bench. I think the 25 creed is finally driving the 25cal high bc bullet interest which is great. The quarter bore is a sweet spot if you ask me. Love my factory 25-06 but fast twist would make a great long range pinker and deer shooter. Before I tabled it I was torn on doing standard or AI version, seemed like an easy way to gain a few fps but not sure it'd be worth the hassle

What action? That would drive my decision more than anything. I had a tikka fast twist 25-06 but I could not reach the lands and stay within magazine length. Now shooting 25CM and a 25-284 with the 135s couldn’t be happier. Plenty of velocity at distance for hunting and recoil is mild enough to spot impacts without a brake. The other thing to consider is quality brass. With the 25-06 your best brass is necked down lapua 30-06 but you will need to neck turn them. 25-284 is as easy swapping a bushing in a 6.5-284 die and necking down. Same with 25CM. 25-06 and 25-284 will run nicely 3000-3100 and the 25cm 2800-2900.

If you built a 25-06 on a Tikka, couldn't you spec the throat correctly to match the mag space you have?
Would Tikka mags for the magnums work with the 06?

Mine was SAAMI spec reamer and I was about .03-.04 off the lands at maximum magazine length with the 131ACE. And the boat tail was a ways below neck/shoulder junction. The 25-284 blackjack reamer is spec’s better in every way to fit tikka LA.

Right on. Thanks

Do you happen to remember your OAL on the 25-06 loads? I'd build off of a Tikka action but would have to drop a redsnake tactical bottom metal and run AICS mags to allow for the longer OAL.

I’d have to check..I ended up as close as I could to mag length. Couldn’t get the 131ACE to shoot very well so I used the 110gr SBDIIs for a while. Didn’t like the terminal performance at long distance and ended up moving to 25 creedmoor and 25-284 with the 135gr Berger’s. Never had the Berger’s to try in the 25-06 but I still have that barrel and lapua brass so it may get revisited down the road if I can find a load that will tolerate lots of jump.

You would have no problem with red snake and aics reaching the lands..but still would likely have boat tail below neck shoulder junction. Unless committed to the 25-06 casing I think the 25-284, 25creed, 25 prc, 25 Saul or 25sst are much better choices for brass availability and reamer design.

Starting a fast twist .25-06 too. I have the dies and 200 bullets already, so what the heck. X-caliber sells fast twist prefits for Tikka for around $450 depending on options.

I'm hearing that if you build off rem 700 action you don't have the COAL constraint issues. In addition, a guy can get a long action rem 700 or T3x lite for $650. Trying to determine best way to go, and since i'm having gunsmith put it together I could go either way. The Tikka has the detachable mag which may ultimately sway my vote.

I built one with a 1:7.5 and it was great, but I got bored after a couple years.

I did mine off of a tikka, but if I had to do it again I'd go with a remington 700 just because of mag constraints. You can also find way more aftermarket support for the 700, so a DBM is well within reason.

Hello All.

I am deciding on pulling the trigger on a Sako 75 25-06, the only thing thats deterring me is the "barrel burner" comment I read on other forums, is that true?

Im no reloader, once I have a bigger place and my 1.5 month old gets a little more independent, I plan on reloading, in the meanwhile I would only shoot factory ammo, does any one have any insight on the Sako 75 or the barrel burner comment?

Thank you.
