Back when I had my 1200GS I rode from Yosemite, where I was working, across country to Tennessee in late October. That was a great trip. I really enjoyed it, other than the rain I ran into on 20 when I went south to detour around some bad weather in Nebraska and Kansas. I still remember the looks on people's faces when I stopped to get gas and took my gloves off and poured water out of my sleeves. My riding suit had a waterproof inner liner that trapped water between it and the shell lol. They thought I was crazy. Great memories though.

I used to tour 6 weeks a year. Quickly discarded any planned routes in favor of coin flips at different intersections and had a great time. Slept in a hammock many times, motels too. Met all kinds of interesting people. Miss those days.

Take a few basic tools and a repair manual if you can use them. Mechanics may not know your bike out in the sticks. Not sure what the best luggage rig would be for your bike but think a bit about how you secure your stuff. Hauling it in and out of hotels is a pain in the ass but necessary in my view in most places.

Go here. Adventure Rider Check the trip planning section or the regional sections for places you might want to go. Did a baja trip a couple years ago on a 250cc. Rode parts of the baja 1000 route. Great time. No issues with banditos. The food was awesome and cheap. Good exchange rate on the peso right now. Although probably a little warm this time of year for baja.

Mosko makes some really cool stuff, and is reasonably priced. Great way to get set up for touring.
If you are planning to ride Western Canada at all, PM me.

I'm currently without a bike but I always preferred to ride alone. Never liked following a leader and would always get random ADD and want to take my own route. I've been on several long rides, the longest a 2,500 mile, 10 state weekend ride. Had an FJR1300 that was a long distance horse. Have one more kid to get through college and I'll probably buy another.

Get some custom molded ear plugs with internal speakers and you're golden. Keeps the wind noise down and you have tunes.
