Looking to take entire family west in June. Start in Blackhills and work way down to Vernal. Have 6 kids but only three are ready for some backpacking and looking to take them on an overnighter just east of Fremont Lake near Pinedale. I know the Winds are crawling with bears but wondered if anyone knew firsthand if there was a lot just east of Fremont? Looking to go back about 6 miles to Photographers Point. Trying to light a fire in them so I have future hunting partners.

Any insight would be great. I don’t mind the bears as much but also know my kids are not backwoods wise yet and I’m willing to look for alternate places to take them into if bears are thick.

Also, any advise on some sights to see while traveling from Vernal area to Denver would be great. That will be toward end of trip but any cool places along the way would be nice to research.

Swing down through the Snowy Range and take a stop in Laramie. Lots of hiking trails take off up top of the range right off the highway.
UW has a neat museum on campus to visit if the kids like dinosaurs, free too.
Go have a pizza in Centennial at Bear Bottom or go over top to Saratoga for a free soak in the hot springs pool- they have a warm swimming pool too.

I hunted in the neighborhood of Fremont Lake last year and didn’t have any bear encounters, but locals talk about them being present, both grizzly and black bears. There have been grizzly sightings to the east as well as south of there over the past year. It doesn’t seem like they are as thick as farther to the northwest, however. If you were looking for a safer option in terms of the kids look more towards the south central to eastern portion of the state. IMO
