Having grown up in SE Alaska with Chesapeakes and Labs I think Id be more surprised if the dog didn't chase the bear. Our dogs chased off bears, otters, mink, and anything else that came around or we happened upon fishing the creeks.
One time a bear came into the yard looking for what we were grilling. It took some convincing, but eventually it decided the food it was smelling wasn’t worth putting up with the dogs.
I don't know about brown bears, but black bears seem to hate having a dog barking and bouncing around in their face. They will run from little motor home dogs.
