So I drew a Colorado elk tag and thinking of turning it back in. It was a third choice tag. Thinking of chasing MT black bears on an unfilled tag from the spring. I know I need to find food sources, when I was there this spring, obviously nothing was producing berries so I did' pay much attention. What's the best terrain to e-scout in hopes of finding berries come fall?

Other option would be is to skip bear and elk and take most of the month of November to concentrate on a general deer tag I have in MT.

Fall bear is fantastic. I typically target chokecherry and mountain ash /rowan berry trees and leftover huckleberry. I would say I mainly kill em in chokecherry filled draws and coulees and I have some spots on medium elevation that are usually loaded with mountain ash berries all fall /winter that typically produce well. I usually stay in more dense foliage with the forage depending on the year and if we’ve had good moisture or if it’s been incredibly dry. If it’s dry and there’s water close by the areas I typically kill them in when it’s bone dry I focus on that. I just know if the forage is good they pretty much just camp out and gorge for as long as they see fit. Good luck man. They are a blast!!
