Does anyone know what powder is used in the factory 6.5 prc 147 load from hornady?? Looking for factual knowledge.

Thanks,

I can just about promise you it's not something you can buy off the shelf. Commercially loaded ammo is nearly always some kind of proprietary blended powder in bulk. They don't load that stuff with powders they get off the shelf in 8lb jugs.

As I said, im looking for someone who knows what it is.

I wasn't trying to be obtuse but I'd bet very few people at Hornady even know what is used and it's likely not something you've ever heard of or is even available to consumers. Small boutique ammo companies may use standardized powders consumers can purchase off the shelf but large commercial level companies don't. If you were to call Hornady and talk to one of their techs they will likely tell you the same thing. I know in years past when I've talked to different companies that is exactly what they told me.

Well, seems like Hornady would prefer to keep proprietary powders exactly that, proprietary. You can ask the question a hundred different ways but I think the answer is going to come back the same every time.

I asked one of their engineers at the FTW Ranch a few years back. He said all of their Match Ammo was a blend. They aren't going to tell us old man..... HAHA!

I read a post from George Gardner that it was RL 26. If anyone would know, I think it would be him. He was very confident about it.

There's a difference in being confident, and right.

I would bet my paycheck that George was correct in his statement. That doesn't mean hornady cant change what powder they use since then.

The PRC was George's idea, he made the GAP 4S just based on brass availability not being there to make the PRC happen immediately and was instrumental in continuing on with the PRC. He partners with Hornady on a lot of things.

Edit: I am curious what steve said further down that thread to support his thoughts though.

Like you said, that could have been the initial powder they used, but Hornady could have easily changed that after George's involvement. I wouldn't bet money on it either way, it could be 90% RL26 and 10% something else. George would still be 90% right, but not 100%. Worth betting money on? Hell no.
