EYE need some help! Optic discussing!!

I have a friend wanting to sell me the Leupold GR 12-40X60mm spotting scope #120371. It's not the HD version. Basically brand new, asking $400-500.

Retail on Leupold is $1200. Obviously its a good deal. My thoughts are I either buy it, use it, or buy it and sell it and buy something better.

Is this piece of equipment adequate for most spotting needs for hunting? I dont have a spotting scope, but want one. Looking for thoughts, dialog, etc. Thanks in advance.
