The Governor's Tag bull was just a little shy of that Commissioner's Tag bull. Both were killed in the same AZG&F Region.

A very nice elk indeed, but as a self-described noob... What exactly is a Governor's tag/Comissioner's tag? I've heard the term before and always just assumed it was quite literally tags reserved for high-ranking officials, wealthy individuals paying-to-play on high-end private units, etc...?

The various states, most specifically in the West, offer special tags to the general public on a raffle type allocation or, for outright purchase through a bidding process.

Governor's Tags and Commissioner's Tags are allocated to the general public in those two ways; either through bidding (auction) or raffle (draw). The raffle tags are kind of like winning the Power Ball (lol).

The hunter, Phillip, has his hand on the elk. In the top pic he’s in front of it. No need to stand too far behind a 450+ bull!

Yeah, my guide said that this weekend there's 430 inch typical 6x6 walking around in that region of Arizona.

Yeah, my guide said that this weekend there's 430 inch typical 6x6 walking around in that region of Arizona.

It looks like all of those bulls are in velvet. Is there any reason why they hunt them that early?

So that nobody else can. Plus it is likely that these bulls live very close to one or more of the reservations in AZ and once they move out of there summer pattern to rut and winter on the Rez, they will no longer be on huntable land.

So that they're not competing with other hunters, or being crowded by other hunters. In other words, to get a jump on the draw permit hunts, which start in September. And, to get out there before the OTC tag deer hunters start their hunts, in August.
