Everyday Backpack

There are a lot of great suggestions here on what I would call "hunt compatible" packs - packs that are either hunt-inspired and should feel familiar if you already like the product line (Kuiu/SG) or actually want something you could e.g. do a day scouting trip with. If that's what you want, my reply is not for you.

Let me throw out one from a totally different direction. I would never hike with this thing, but I own one of these for my "everyday" pack:

It checks a lot of boxes for daily use. The front compartment has good organization for small items you often need traveling for work - pens, cards, USB keys, notepads, etc. There is a top compartment with outer and inner zips that's great for things like glasses and kleenex or quickly stuffing your wallet when you're about to go through security at the airport. Two side pockets for water bottles with retention straps for taller items. There are larger side zip compartments behind the water bottle pockets that are perfect for stuffing a rain jacket, umbrella, or that spotting scope you just had to bring. 😀

The laptop compartment has three sections, all padded - one big one for a laptop, and a second if you have another laptop (which folks may scoff at, but if you're e.g. a field service tech you might have a company-issued Toughbook and your own computer, or whatever - or just use it as a place to stuff notepads, clipboards, etc). A smaller section inside there is perfect for an iPad or Kindle.

TSA approved, fits under a seat no matter how much you stuff into it, rugged. I've put mine through 7 years of abuse now and it's not even getting hairy at the stitching (I'm really hard on my gear). It used to be $50 - it's like $85 now - but I would buy it all over again if I lost it.

Edit: Looks like black/grey is still $53. It's a steal at that price IMO.

My 5.11 back pack has been great! Lots or organization and tough. Mine goes everywhere with me for about 2 years now.

MR blitz. 30 or 35.
I have-
Blitz 30
Vertx Gamut
SG Avail
511 Rush 24
Kuiu Divide 2800

I use my blitz 30 the most

The new SG ANC3000 looks good as well, I just wish a bit more organization for an edc

I have had a Kifaru Urban Zippy for many years as my daily carry. I load it up with my laptop and portable monitor for travel. super tough. good organization with the side zipper access. these are imposible to find.

Grab an avail out of the classifieds for 200 bucks and rip off the hip belt. Owned many high dollar day packs, it’s the one that gets the most use.

For those of you recommending the Avail, have you found any solutions for a laptop sleeve and water bottle holder?
That's been my biggest hang up with the Avail...no side bottle pockets. Bought and sold a few of them now trying to make it work but I need bottle pockets on my edc pack.

I carried a leather briefcase to work for years and eventually switched to an Orvis Battenkill Businessman's backpack due to the amount I was traveling at the time. The waxed canvas looks nice enough to use in a business setting and when traveling. The only downside to it is it's not waterproof. But they're tough and last a long time. I have taken mine all over the world and to some pretty harsh places over the last decade or so. I've had some stitching loose for a year or more that needs to be fixed, but that's the only issue. The numerous zippered pockets make it hard to replace with something else.

Assuming not for hunting...

Swiss Gear backpack. On my third pack and both of the previous ones had over 1 million flight miles (in the bin and under the seat) and unknown amount of other travel types (e.g. driving or walking) before crapping out. Full of gear and often clothes. Ton of use and abuse at client sites including some that had hostile environmental conditions.

Tried other products and none of them came close to the lifespan of the Swiss Gear.

Just grabbed this today from Amazon. Hoping it’ll work out well for my needs.

Agreed. I’ve used my Avail for travel, carry-on, day hikes, and shooting matches. Pretty happy with it.

I sold the avail and do a tokeen right now. It works great especially as a carry on to a trip I need to hike. I just hate going to a meeting on a work trip and needing papers and my underwear falls out. I just wish it had a laptop sleeve and water bottle pocket outside. I ordered the ANC and if I dont like it Ill try another. I wrote out everything I wanted in a carry back pack in May and the ANC fit that bill.

Took my Kif Echo to NZ as my personal item as well as domestic flights without issue. Can hold my shave kit and several days clothes if need be. Also use it for the daily. And have taken it on plenty of day hikes. But I also got it in CB on clearance and a fair bit cheaper than what the RG goes for.

I’ve been rolling with a Kifaru Antero 2.0 for a few years now and really like it, plus it’s lined so can handle work around the water/rain etc and protect your stuff. Took it to Africa too and it doubled as a day pack while on safari, but mostly a shit load of traveling for work. It’s held up great in tougher than ‘just the office’ work environments (Derrick barges, tug boats, constructions sites, etc)

For long travels or days where I need to carry lunch and extra work gear I use it with a Sherman clipped on the back. In that configuration on a long flight the Sherman has iPad, headphones, cables, and book in it, then the pack goes in the overhead, and Sherman comes with me to the seat, which gives me more leg/foot room.

Another smaller and sleeker option that is spendy but very quality, that my wife stole from me (ha) is the Axiom by Triple Aught Design… but you probably gotta really love backpacks to shell out the coin.

I’m curious about these new SG travel backpacks, ANC and BZN, if they’re as durable long term. My Kifaru seems as if it will last longer than me so far and I have it with me nearly every day still, since early 2022.
