The wife and I want to take a trip out of the US next year. She said we can spend a few days of the trip hunting. But she said British Columbia isn't an option...

I'd really like to hunt in Europe and she wants to see the sites there.

Has anyone ever hunted there? Not sure where, probably Germany but open to ideas. Not sure exactly what I'd like to hunt. Something economical.

Can you bow hunt in Europe? I know their do a lot of drives and rifle hunts. How much of a pain is it to get a rifle across the pond? I know they have some silly laws over there as far as guns and weapons.

What about hunting the Apls, they have Ibex right?

Thanks

I hate to say it but. .France has some great hunting for roe deer on private estates. Take a look at the BSC for info. It's fairly reasonable and gets great reviews

Ill second what Trail153 says,

It might depend on what your wife is interested in. Mine is an art lover. So several days in Paris and a couple of trips to the Louvre earned me some mega brownie points. I found normal everyday French people to be friendly and helpful. I saw an episode of Magnum hunt club were they were hunting roe deer in France not too long ago. Tim Herald from World wide Trophy adventures had hunted all over Europe too.

I tried to look up some outfitters in Germany before I traveled there for business last summer. I couldn't find anyone for the area I was going to visit.

Plenty of good hunting in Austria, I have hunted in the Salzburg area for Roebuck, Chamois, Red Stag, and Black Grouse. My dad was born and raised their so I still have connections to return and continue hunting. I highly recommend hunting in Southern Germany and Austria, and can answer a ton of questions about it as we have taken a bunch of US folks over for their first Euro hunts.

As for the questions you asked in the original post:

- Bow hunting will not be an option for most high alpine hunts, you may have a chance at Roebucks with archery in the lowlands but Id doubt any Chamois up on top.

- Most of the big game hunting is done by stand hunting or glassing & spot n stalk in the mountains.

- Don't bother bringing a firearm, most guides/outfitters recommend the use of their own to save you the hassle. They will have you shoot the rifle prior to the hunt at a range to make sure you are comfortable with the rifle and they are comfortable with your shooting abilities.

- Hunting the High Alpine region and the Alps is some of the most beautiful country I have ever hunted, cannot say enough good things about the region. If I were to be experiencing it for the first time, I would go on either a Roebuck or Chamois hunt in August.

- Ibex: Yes, the Alps do have Ibex. However they are in small populations spread out. Plus they are extremely expensive to hunt, the hunt usually starts with a base price plus an addition trophy fee for however big the ibex you shoot it. This can be anywhere from 5-25k depending on the animal and the outfitter.

Any more questions, let me know!
