Ethical “Time of Flight” for Shot on Game

In a forum of the top hunters in the country, aspiring to be a half ass average drunk deer camp bullet sprayer is a very very low bar. No thanks.

It does put into proper perspective what different members actual interest in first round hits is.

While I want hunters to be above average citizens, and shots…

And I want Rokslide to be the best subset of hunters…

It’s just not reality to make that assumption. The only barrier of entry into Rokslide is being able to afford internet.

It’s also true that the killingist hunters I know are the woundingist hunters I know. I don’t hang out with people who kill things they don’t eat. I don’t hang out with people who wound more things than they kill. That helps keep me in the right company.

But it ain’t one unrecovered animal for every 10 in our crew.

I maintain my stance that anyone saying they don’t wound animals, also doesn’t kill many. Animals have a say. They’re moving targets with some level of locomotion independent of my desire to eat them. And shit happens.

I wish it were a higher odds proposition. I strive to be better. I don’t like making living things suffer and I love eating living things. Properly incentivized you could say.

If your goal is to guilt crappy shooters and decision makers into being better ones, I doubt it’s working. You’re not in their ear when the time comes to pull the trigger.

But you are probably doing a good job of making decent people and decision makers who’ve wounded an animal feel even worse about something that’s bound to happen to them a lot if they get good at hunting.

Set in their way adults aren’t changing for anyone and there is no expectation of convincing them of anything. However these conversations are taught to every kid, or they definitely should be, and reinforced by those around them throughout their life. I’ll never believe ethics conversations should be ignored to avoid hurting someone’s feelings and reinforce their poor choices in life. Same for ethics in all parts of someone’s life. I call out guys trying to defraud companies with made up returns, or guys cheating on their taxes, beating up their wives, or shooting game out of season. Why shouldn’t I call out someone for killing multiple animals because they only recovered one? What makes sloppy marksmanship and poor judgement a badge of honor.

Our kids weren’t raised to lie, cheat, steal, pick on the unfortunate, to be lazy, not use use their brains, back stab coworkers, cheat on taxes, or blow the legs off big game because they aren’t up to the task. Our family surrounds ourselves with similar minded folks and encourages others to do the same. I say what I say to let other kids and grown up kids know that the values they live by are appreciated.

On an entirely different level, many of us have antlers that show the effort, sacrifice, woodsmanship, marksmanship, and hunting skills we put into it. Two friends have 380ish elk on the wall. One was caught in the open by a truck load of guys who fired well over 20 rounds, hitting it 7 times including bullet holes in the antlers. Nobody knows who dropped it, if that even matters. It’s a great rack, but it’s not a trophy of hard work. The other equally nice rack was taken in the timber with a single shot from a 257 Roberts by a guy who waits for a good shot, and puts the effort in by packing in for many weeks every year. It’s 5x the trophy of the truck hunters.

Your response has literally nothing to do with what I wrote nor your original message that I was responding to. Were you drunk when you typed it?

Are you just here to watch yourself post crap to make yourself feel elitist? That's all I see post after post.

Agreed - not sure what that was all about.
