Essay On Bear Defense

Link isn’t working for me FYI! Interested to see what all he says

I am usually against having anything to do with confronting bears but this is some good info.

I'd be interested to read other people's opinion on this article. On the one hand you have a guy who has some street cred when it comes to how to stop bears. On the other hand, he is advocating--even admitting to a long history--of shoot, shovel, and shut up. I'm not ready to give that policy a free pass. This guy needs to chill out and quit illegally killing bears.

My take;
What you will see with this bear issue is a lot of anecdotal evidence. This guy Tim in your link is just another case [Wow- did he really recommend killing a bear illegally?] and of course he has a vested interest- he is selling purpose specific ammo.

There is an article on Ammoman site compiling bear defense case studies- more anecdotal evidence for your essay. Typically a researcher can see patterns when studying a large data base ...but in the cases of bear defense by firearm....it's not a huge data base.

One reason there isn't more of these cases to study; Some folks don't report them due to the intense investigation that ensues. So if a large part of the data is missing...its hard to form a conclusion except for the fact....there aren't a lot of folks with firearms in the woods dying in bear attacks- very few.

Lots of wildcard factors to you to ponder.....if you really want to analyze this. Personally, I think the data will prove out [eventually] that hard cast wide meplat bullets are the way to go when it comes to defending yourself against a charging deadly predator.

How powerful does it have to be- 9mm- .44mag?

Hunters have been arguing over where to draw THAT line for decades!

...

I have a hard time believing anyone with a capable firearm in hand who is in a stare-down with a big grizzly exhibiting aggressive behavior wouldn't have their finger on the trigger ready to start shooting as soon as the bear began to close distance. It wasn't clear from the guy's article if he would give a grizzly a chance to rethink the decision and run off into the woods, but as was stated above, there's some line in the sand somewhere and it seems open to debate. Hopefully I never have to find out where it is for myself.

On that note, however, I'm reconsidering my bear gun options as I am at a point in my life where I'm going to hopefully be doing more hunting (and potentially with some friends in MT). I have a Glock 31 right now (.357 SIG) which holds 15 rounds. In a stress/defense situation, I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to have more than twice as many chances to hit something important with a FMJ .357 SIG round as opposed to a .44, .454, etc. I guess the easy answer is "Glock 20" with the same 15 round mags. But same question there... 15 x 10mm rounds vs 5-6x .44 or .454 rounds?

I think I'd feel much more comfortable with the Glock 20 and FMJs (or alternate FMJ and JHP in the clip), but you don't know what you don't know!

A good read, thanks for the link. I agree with his position on shooting them. I hope I'm never faced with having to shoot one in self defense but not a chance I'd hesitate if I were. Hard for me to imagine why anyone would.

Pretty Ballsy of him to admit to killing bears illegally. It doesn't bother me, just surprised.

Outfitters in remote areas quickly take care of problem bears. They must.
I can't say enough for a short barreled 12 gauge but when that is cumbersome I carry a 10mm with proper ammo. We all have the right to defend ourselves and loved ones.
