I was looking at new quilt/bags this afternoon and stumbled on this sale - bought a 50 and a -10 degree.

If someone who has no idea about down quilts stumbles upon this sale, what should they buy for Alberta fall hunting? I've read for quilts you usually want the long/wide to have as much quilt possible to wrap up in and eliminate drafts.

Quilts have snaps at the top and a footbox so its not exactly like a blanket. But yes size a bit on the generous size to be safe. I have no idea what kind of temps you are expecting in Alberta so check that.
Another tip is to get one of the warm sleeping hats if they still make them. I like mine.

I'd say -5 Celsius up here would be the coldest I'd be backcountry hunting in.

EE has a few different models of quilts, what are some of the better ones if you know?

I think I have the Enigma. Follow the size guidelines. If in down size up. Get it warm enough for your expected temps and maybe a tad extra. Get a warm hat. Other than that don't overthink it. They work.

How are their apex synthetics? Or should a guy just get down?

The synthetic insulation works. I did use a synthetic quilt on the Colorado Trail and it was nice not having to worry about getting it damp. But other than that down is lighter for the same warmth, more compressible and lasts longer. So over all a better investment for most people. A compromise is a dawn quilt that it rated for 10 degrees colder than what you expect. It will weigh roughly what a synthetic quilt quilt would for the expected temperature and have some wiggle room if it gets damp and loses a bit of loft. In other words for 20 degrees pack a 10 degree down quilt.

What are you guys using for stuff sacks/dry bags? I picked up a long wide -1C 850 fill enigma

I use sea to summit light weight dry bags for almost all of my gear. Have a couple different sizes, one that fits entire sleep system. Many guys don’t “bag” their bag. They just stuff it in back pack.

So you use one bag for your quilt and pad? How many liters would that be?

Yes, quilt, pad, sleep clothes all in one. I believe it is their 35 liter ultra sil, possibly 20 liter but not sure.
