Just thought I’d show you guys some elk my grandma has in her backyard I would do anything to kill these guys but the community is super against hunting and you get arrested

I have lived in northern CA my entire life. Over the last 15 years, I have seen the elk population grow and spread. Growing up, we never saw elk, elk sign, or even had hunts available.

I see quite a few in town near Willits and along 101 headed north.

I found a herd within a few miles of I-5, North of Lake Shasta, just west of the freeway.

Welcome to RS and I would be looking into getting a CA elk tag if I were you...
A lot of us apply every year. But it generally is considered a once in a lifetime tag. They are still drawing max point holders....

Each zone does have a portion of tags assigned randomly.

Ah heck just enjoy them. Some dandy bulls. They get that big there for a reason ! When i visit RMNP i get the same feeling but eventually just appreciate the big bulls doing their elk stuff. Beautiful animals and a lot of people dont realize just 100 years ago we had hunted them to near extinction. Theyre a huge success story for conservation.

I know no one asked but here’s a little backstory on them. In my grandmas town there was a guy who had a high fence elk ranch where he would breed some monsters. One day the fence broke many years ago and now the entire herd roams around the mountains by her house.
