I'm looking for a new elk/mule deer rifle for my wife. She currently has a semi automatic 30-06 that is notorious for jamming. I'm really interested in a 280 Ackley improved but I'm not interested in any of the rifles I have found online. How much does a custom rifle run on a budget?

Enless its just a "want" I dont think there is any point on going full custom on a rifle for her. Get her a good reliable factory rifle and a ton of ammo to shoot

I'm not really wanting a custom rifle just looking for one with a decent action and shoots good with a wood stock but I haven't found any with a wood stock chambered in a 280

You’ll probably be in the $2,000 range. I’d find a donor that is what you want and have a gunsmith re barrel it to the caliber of your choice.

If you’re not set on the 280 ai, 7mm-08 is a great option, and available in multiple factory rifles.

Weatherby Camilla has .280 AI as a factory chambering.
I'm a second vote for this. I got my wife the Camilla in 7mm-08 but they offer several chamberings. It's a gorgeous rifle and the stock is specifically made for women, with a negative angle on the butt pad, a shorter length of pull, raised comb, etc. It's basically 90% of what you'd want from a true custom but at a good price and readily available.

I would prefer that if I can find one. If not I was eyeballing the browning xbolt2 hunter in 270 win.
I would encourage you to look into some of the newer caliber offerings. I'm an old guy that was slow to get on board with them but the bottom line is you can get similar, if not better, terminal performance with much lower recoil. Nothing wrong with your choices but there are better performing offerings on the market. Our group shoots 5-10 elk a year and the largest caliber we have used in the past 4 years is a 6.5PRC.

Ditto on the Wby Camilla - I got my wife the Vanguard in 6.5CM. Shoots great. The 280AI I'm pretty sure is just in the Mark V which is a 2x+ jump in price.

What calibers would you suggest, most shots would be 300yds or less but occasionally up to 500yds max.

UM $2,899
That’s a bargain for one of Jake’s guns…The last rifle I am putting together is a 6 creed:

$900 for action and trigger
$700 for barrel
$400 for stock
$200 for bottom metal
$100 for magazines
$100 for gunsmith work

2,400 total I bought most of the parts 2 years ago so add 10% at least to the cost.

Should have it together next week.
