Elk in high winds

When it is warm, they will be bedded on the lee side and in an area with feed in the trees. They won't move much except for water. When it is cold and there is snow covering the grass in the trees, they will often bed near an open wind blown slope where they can feed for short windows during the day if they need extra energy since the cold and wind affects them just like it does us.

When doesn't the wind blow in Wyoming?
I agree with the above post.
Spent days hunting deer in high winds, they were all on the lee side.
Spouse found some elk tucked away in the draws too, open country hunting.

Basically if you arent getting blasted by the wind or the sun to look into the comfortable side of the mountain, you arent going to see anything. Meaning if you are sitting on the windward side of the mountain freezing your butt off so you can look at the side of the mountain that is out of the wind, you are in the right spot.

They still gotta eat - so if consistent- they’ll feed in areas of least amount of wind (i.e. sheltered areas).

Obviously if they need to transit OR are being pushed - they will need to move regardless of wind.

I usually look for out of the way drainages with sun. I just killed a raghorn the other day like that. Wind was 40mph plus and I found them in a shithole of a drainage. Getting sun and feeding at the end of the day. It’s honestly my favorite to hunt most anything. It sucks but when you find them it’s game on. You can make some extra mistakes too which is always helpful getting close and not getting busted🤷
