Elk hunting unit 751 colorado

I am looking into hunting the northern part of unit 751 and was thinking of hiking down from 76 and following the pack trail in along the los pinos river. It would be the last week of archery season and I was wondering if anyone here that had any experience in the area could give me an idea of what kind of pressure it gets. I understand this is decent hike in before I can even start hunting and expect some horseback hunters to be in the area but if it gets me away from the crowds it would be well worth it. You'll see others but plenty of room to play. Like all OTC units it will have it's pressure, no getting away from that in OTC but you just have to find that middle ground between backpackers and horse hunters.

You're not getting away from the crowd there. In fact I know of at least four guys from here who are planning to be right there for archery. You will make five that I know of. All the Roksliders should get together and coordinate the hunting so you are not on top of one another or find different areas. There are some great areas in 75/751 I hear but a lot of hunters are coming down through Weminuche pass. There are horse hunters and drop camps there too. I haven't heard of a bunch of Roksliders along Vallecito creek but they may just be keeping quiet.

Hunting isn't the best there and there are some easy access points above and below. Elk are there though.

There are better places to go, but you will get into elk there

I hunted that same route last year. Its a huge hike, and there are plenty of folks. I hiked past 3 horse camps, and crossed many hikers on the trail. Still didn't get away from the crowds. It has elk in there as all the wilderness areas do. I actually carried an injured hiker out of there last year. I won't be back this year, I've found other places that will be less crowded.

I also followed the same route last year. I would say that it is a big hike and the there will be a good number of folks you pass on the trails but that has already been said. If you go this route I would suggest exiting the main trail as soon as you cross the divide.

We stayed up in the north side of the unit. We didn't have much elk action in there. I like the area, if/when we go back we will be using a different TH for sure.

Hey sorry to bring up a dead thread...How was Southeast of Verde ?? I'm planning an elk hunt for this september(my first one). I want to get away from the crowed and get into some elk, Did you end up making it out to Verde Lake back in 2013 ?

I hunt 75 and 751 with a rifle every year 1st season. There are always camps- you would think when your in the mountains and hunting your going to see a bunch of hunters in orange- but when you get into the tough terrain- you really don't see that many. The most I have ever seen in a day is 2 separate hunters-but I did see hunters on most days. With a rifle, I kind of welcomed another hunter on the other side of a hill with the thought of elk being pushed. I have hunted the NW part of Colorado in 23 and 24 and saw just as much if not more camps set up. Its one of those things you need to adjust to, unless your on private-there will always be some pressure. I wouldn't steer from a spot that's named like on this post-anyone can say something to discourage another hunter from hunting there giant spot- look at the earth maps- that's a huge huge area!
