Elk hunting around FoCo

New to the Fort Collins area and looking for general advice on Elk hunting in this area I drove up 14 the other day and turned off pengree Park doing some turkey hunting and saw a lot of elk sign up there and am wondering if this area holds good amounts of Elk during hunting season?

If you select 'Game Species'. you can toggle thru wintering areas, summer areas, migration patterns/corridors, etc...

Funny, seems like most Colorado hunters near Ft Collins come up to Wyoming to hunt, at least from the traffic on 287 it looks that way.
Good amount of pressure in those areas but some elk too.

Not sure if you are aware and trying to hunt there this season but 7,8,9,19,191 are all draw units near Fort Collins.

I’m sure there are elk there. If you are seeing fresh elk sign there currently then maybe they are down low for winter and could be in a totally different spot come season. You never know!

The elk hunting around Fort Collins isn't the best. There are some elk around, but they are few and far between as reflected by the harvest stats. However, if you spend the time you will figure out where they like to hangout, but where they are now is not where they will be next September/October. Speaking as someone who elk hunted 9/19/191 for my first two years and have now moved on to the White River herd for the last 10 years. In addition, once you get to the second, third, and fourth seasons you will see alot more people that are deer hunting in these areas. If you are using your first choice for a local elk tag I would look somewhere else, but if you pick up a leftover/reissue, then it is worth trying.

Good to hear! I went OTC archery last year and got into some Elk in Unit 15 but it’s no day trip back to that place. I’d like to find a few spots I could hunt with out having to make a 3-4 day trip.

Look at the elk numbers that CPW publishes and you will see that there are a few elk in those units. A lot of private in those units as well. Do your research and put the time in, just like all units in CO.

Not in the last 23 years or so. Doves, Pheasants out East, or grouse in the hills are about the only upland action you will get out this way.

CPW attempted stocking them a few years ago, but as far as I know, it failed.
