I'm looking for recommendations for a new pair of hiking boots that will work well while elk hunting. Currently all I own are cold weather boots (Minnesota hunting), but plan to do Montana elk in the next few years. Please give me your opinions and likes/dislikes. Thanks.

You want ones that fit your feet. Go to an REI or similar and try on as many good brand name boots as possible. See what fits your foot the best. Just because they are expensive doesn't mean they are going to work for you. Just look at my hunting closet, I've got a pair of $400 Lowa's just collecting dust. Turns out Lowa's don't fit my feet. Great boot for other people though.

I ended up going with the kenetrek guide boots (NI). There are a lot of great choices out there....like the post above, I have a pair of lowa, zamberlan, and a couple others just sitting in my closet as a result of threads just like this one
Good luck

Depends on terrain to be covered, pack weight, and the width, volume, and relative flatness of YOUR feet. FWIW, I just finished 5 days in remote section of CO. Very steep, boulders everywhere. Crispi Colorado’s were overwhelmed by steepness and boulder fields. After 2 days, went back to truck for Scarpa Charmoz. These were perfect.

The Lowa Renegade GTX Mid was a game changer for me. Multiple widths. No break in period. As comfortable as any pair of tennis shoes I have.

I own Lowa Camino GTX and Renegade GTX. I wear the caminos more often. Both can be fine choices. Also, I am running Gravitus insoles. These made a huge difference in comfort level.

These are a great choice for early season elk in Arizona and for hiking year round, flagman

I’ve only owned one pair of legit hunting boots. With that said I went with the zamberlan 980 and I’ve really liked it so far. With only about 30ish miles on them I’d vouch for them. Took some time to break in but they are nice now. Not saying they are the best but it’s an option. Good luck

What works for one doesn’t always work for another. Try on several brands and see what fits your feet the best. I run Crispi Nevada and have had zero issues through two elk/deer seasons. Whatever you get change out the insoles. $400 boots doesn’t mean they have good insoles.
