Rather than approach this as what everyone should have for their elk hunting gear this year, let’s hear one thing which was the biggest waste of space, weight, or was sold to be the cat’s meow and only ended up being completely worthless.

I don’t have bone to pick as this is my first year backpacking and hunting elk.

Expensive camo
Expensive camo, sure. Expensive clothes in general I’ll disagree.
There are plenty of budget clothing peices that are great(I’m in love with the wrangler stretch cargo pants) but I do think there is value in the good stuff(in solids🤣)
I usually go with good tops, jackets, puffy jackets and base layers. Pants I go with my $21 Walmart specials

For where I was, the tripod was a waste.

Things didn’t have that I will next time:
Gaiters
A lightweight chair
Crocs

Thick timber hunt? I have a lightweight chair that I’ve been thinking about bringing but felt that was a waste of weight.

Only elk we found were in timber for sure. Seriously considering some 8x32s and leaving the 10x42s behind for archery. We were there during ML season in an otc unit.

I found myself wanting to kick back with dinner every night. I had a little stool, but for similar weight could have one of those helinox style chairs. We packed into a base camp though, so I wasn’t carrying camp all day.

Two things I added for this year that I'm on the fence about carrying is a Montana cow decoy and an REI Flexlite Air chair. The chair was a Fathers day gift from my daughter, I probably would never spend 100 bucks for a lawn chair. The decoy will depend on how far we have to pack in on whether it makes the trip. The chair is comfy and might be worth the pound.
