New to elk calling with diaphragm calls, is there a difference between rocky mountain and Phelps calls?

There are differences not only between brands, but between lines within any brand. Buy a couple from each company and see which one works best for you. Then practice. I’d also recommend looking into some of ElkNuts stuff...

This...buy a few from a some different brands. Everyone on here will chime in what works best for them which is great...but it is really what works best for you. That largely depends on how the reed fits in your mouth too. Phelps grey and green are a decent place to start for most people in getting sounds. Give each reed some time however as it takes a little to break the reed in and then work on your sounds. This is a great time of year to start doing some practice though. Like others will mention too...the ElkNut App is next level in preparing you for calling/scenarios.

Best of luck.

I tired to get that picture to rotate. I posted that on a Phelps thread awhile back. My local bow shop had that poster up and I thought it provided some good information that I couldn’t find on the Phelps website. Elk101 has some good videos detailing this very selection. Corey (Rocky Mountain) basically recommends getting his package of 3 that covers the full spectrum so you can find what works for you. I had to trim my elk 101 Reed compared to the Phelps so I could get a good seal. Start on the mid to low end, loose and thin latex which will be much easier to get sound. Work up from there once you get comfortable producing sounds. I use anywhere from the Phelps black through the white depending on the sound I want with the middle of that range being ideal for me. The elk 101 orange works well and I have many many Rocky Mountain. The mellow yellow from Rocky Mountain also works really well especially for beginners. I’ve bought and given or thrown away probably 50 plus diaphragms. For a long time there just wasn’t a lot of information out there on how to call and what each diaphragm was ideal for. Start on YouTube because there is a lot of information out there now both on how to call and also which diaphragm to start with.

+1 on the trimming , the Phelps poster also helps after you get a idea of the type calls that work best for you.

I wanted to like the Rocky Mountain calls but there metal palate plate doesn't agree with my mouth and the slot in there plastic dome tears up the roof of my mouth so I'm a Phelps fan boy I guess. Purchase a call from each and give them a try.

I’ve used Wapiti River Outdoors, Phelps, Rocky Mtn, Primos calls. I really like the WRO and Phelps AMP the best.

I have to trim them all. Some I like the dome, some without.

Most all are a double reed.

Not a great deal of change since the 80s.I still have a couple Larry Jones diaphragms from back then(just holding on to them, not using)but have to say the first ones since then, that have made a noticeable, favorable difference to me,are the AMP calls from Phelps.Great!
Need to get my hands on DDs 'Maverick' to see what if any difference they make.

If you want to become a fantastic elk caller....get good at turkey diaphragm calls! Elk calling is a piece of cake compared to learning and correctly reproducing all the different turkey calls! There are fantastic youtube elk and turkey calling videos that will help a bunch!

As mentioned above, it's good to try several different brands and find one that works best for you. I have a super narrow jaw so trim every call I own.

The Carlton calls pack with a few reeds and cd is a good place to start. You should be able find them on sale at Walmart here soon. Then get a few different brands and see what you like.

I'm new to elk calls but after talking with Elknut he directed me to a 1/2" and 5/8" to see which one worked in a single reed Rocky Mountain call. I was trying to work around a dental partial I wear but the 1/2" wouldn't fit with it in. With the partial out the mellow yellow has been fairly easy to learn with.

Phelps amp frame is easiest to use for me and I have tried them all. That being said you have to find one or two that fit your mouth. Check out Elk calling academy (Michael Batese) on Facebook. He's a great caller and teacher. Even does lessons at a reasonable price.

Like most people have been saying buy a handful and just see which ones work. I bet I went through a dozen before finding one I liked.

I've tried Wapiti River, Primos and Rocky Mt. I settled on the Rocky Mt as it fit my mouth the best and I could get consistent sounds out of it. I made my own bugle tube.

Check out Reel Elk Calls if you struggle with using a mouth diaphragm call. They are really easy to use especially for a novice caller.

My pallet is too small for a regular/standard frame diaphragm and too large for a small/child frame diaphragm so I struggled to get a seal and be able to make any reliable noise. I have tried several different brands and models within the brand and have spent a decent amount of time and money doing so. It was not until Phelps released his Amp series that I was finally able to use a diaphragm call reliably. It is real nice not having to rely on external reed calls.

I trim all my diaphragm calls to fit my mouth. Once I got one to fit correctly I merely trace and cut others to match.
