I've been doing a lot of scouting of Colorado for OTC elk. I just noticed that Montana has a Elk/Deer combo for $900ish. My questions are, is there an option for OTC CO elk/deer combo? Is the MT combo an OTC permit, Rifle or Bow? It seems to me that the combo for under 1000 is a great deal. I'd be down with going to Montana, I really don't want to mess with Grizzly Bears, what would be your advice for my purposes, thanks guys.

1. The tags are not OTC they are limited but there are usually leftovers that can be purchased.
2. There is not combo hunt in Colorado but you could find a OTC elk unit and then try to draw a deer tag for the same season.
3. The Montana tag is just a tag and can be used to hunt the archery or general season or both.

The Montana elk deer combo is $1027.80 all in paid with a card online. Plenty of places to hunt but there are grizzly bears in some areas and Colorado has a lot more elk.

The nice thing about Montana is you get 3 months to hunt deer and elk with endless country to roam.

If you don't think you'll be dealing with Grizzlies in Montana I've got some oceanfront property I'll sell ya right outside of Missoula. Depends on the part of the state, but Yellowstone area and SW Montana have Griz, so does NW Montana. Like has been mentioned already, tag is over 1k now, and true, the season is really long. But if you are coming out from KY how many weeks are you realistically going to get to hunt?

I just got my Montana Elk Deer Combo yesterday... $1,037... I went ahead and got a permit for 270-45.... I will be in Missoula and might be nice to try out that unit.

As far a living with the Griz goes, I just posted on another thread.

When it comes down to it, you just have to accept the fact that they are out there and embrace it, you are living the dream. The odds are in your favor and attacks are crazy rare considering the numbers of people that enter griz country each year. Especially, when you consider the idiots that go out there. You seriously have a much much higher chance of getting killed driving to your hunting spot. Does that stop you from going hunting! The bears should not either. Just think how famous you will be if you go that way.

your best bet in CO for a combo hunt is 2nd rifle or archery seasons, if you don't have points for deer. Lots of the otc elk units are an easy draw for mulies during 2nd and archery. downside is that both those seasons are tough hunting for big deer.
