How big of a cooler is needed to hold a bull elk quarter? Read around a 150qt for a bone in elk due to the length of the hind quarter. Preparing for enough cooler space for two bulls. Anyone have a preference in brand for a rotomold? There’s a chance the elk would need to be on dry ice for a week.

Don't worry I'm new around here also but there is a thread started on here about twice a week asking the same thing you just asked. Read a bit on here and you will find the answers your looking for.

Thanks for the info. I saw you needed ten posts to get messaging access now so I was hoping to get those out of the way with a couple of questions in my head.

Two 150 qt coolers should be enough for the meat but not including the cape. I would also recommend against using dry ice as your primary cooling agent as it will freeze the meat. If all you are going to use it for is ground meat and sausage you will be fine, but freeze/thaw/ freeze can make steaks kinda mushy.

Try RTIC coolers, built so much like a YETI, they got sued by them for patent infringement. Just as nice but 50% cheaper in most cases. They sell direct so their prices are way lower.

You get a lot more space out of a 150 Coleman Xtreme than any of the rotomolded coolers, so if temps are mild when you're going to be hunting and you don't need days of ice retention you may consider that. I can't even fit my RTIC 145 under my bed cover but I can put two Coleman 150's side by side in my truck under the cover and have room in the back to put a 3rd across.

Can’t speak to how much elk it will hold but I have a Coleman Xtreme 150 and it holds ice great! We have used it for a 5 day camping trip to hold all our food and didn’t have to reload on ice. This is getting into it several time times a day. I have two kids that think getting things out of the cooler is pretty fun! Lol! Plus I agree that they are much lower profile than the rotomolded. Not to mention a fraction of the price. If I remember correctly I paid $100 for it at Costco. A guy can buy a lot of ice for the difference!

We used two of the 80Q cabelas YEti knock offs and they worked great. Hold ice for a week easy.

And welcome to the site. I always get a kick out of the guys who get real snarky about someone asking a question on a forum. That’s the whole point of the forum. Lol

Every question has been asked so we might as well close this down.

Saw a Grizzly 400 today in Sportsman’s Warehouse. My wife could bury me in it.
I believe you could fit an elk in it.

Remove the shank from the lower bone and separate the joint at the femur. It will shorten the hind quarter by about 12". That joint is held together with only tendon.

(2) around 100 - easier to man handle in and out of a truck.

If your only gone a week, most large coolers will work like everyone is saying. You can buy allot of ice for the cost of some of these roto molded beasts.
