Moved out to UT from KY and I've been out scouting for my 1st ever mule deer and elk tags this fall. The spot my tags are for is mostly private land on the high elevation summer range 10000-9000ft and then the majority of public starts around 9000. There isn't alot of water around in this unit.
In the two different places I've seen good elk sign there was two different setups .
One was around 8200 feet elevation, bedding area with a ton of old gray scat , but had alot of fresh rubs around the sagebrush meadows above, and benches below but couldn't find any fresh scat.
The other spot was around 9200 elevation
. A bunch of fresh rubs in the dark timber and I bumped a bull out of his bed, and then found what I'm assuming were his sheds in a thick aspen draw about .75 miles away. This spot is about 2 miles bushwack from the access road .
Basically my question is for my rifle hunt dates that fall on Oct 4-10 what type of areas should I be keying in on? I can find areas from 10k feet (although they are much more limited) to 7500-8500 (which are much more abundant) with difficult access where not many people will go.
It also seems like the 7500-8500 zone has alot less quality feed and it's mostly sage and PJ with some bitterbrush mixed in
