Elk basics

My hunt went pretty well overall. I heard bugles everyday, seen elk, the group of 3 I was invited along with didn't really prepare for this hunt and I was hesitant to go with them but my wife wasn't very keen on me going alone for my first trip. 1st and 2nd day we scouted up high and came up with no sign. We did find sign down lower near private and a buglefest going on, on private. The rest of the guys spent 3 days trying to call them off private while I scouted where they were crossing public/private found some bedding areas and looked for water. On public we would barely hear a bugle or cows mew, only at last light or breaking daylight. Busted a few cows out of bedding which can be expected from my first elk hunt. Water was a limiting factor in the area so 2 of us sat water and had cows come in I went full draw and settled the pin only to have the guy that invited me tell me not to shoot because the cow had a calf with her that he thought was still nursing. I went by myself the last night of the hunt and had a 4x4 at 95 yds moved into 75 yds but couldn't get any closer I'm comfortable at 55yds max so I tried cow calling to try and have him come in he looked but worked his way over the ridge I tried to go after him but to no avail. All in all I seen elk more than half the days of hunting heard bugles everyday. And had 2 encounters. I will be back. Solo or with guys I know better and a better strategy.

That's my feelings also but being he invited me and was driving, I listened even though I've been waiting to hunt elk for the last few years. Definently a low point. Wont happen again I know that
