Not going to an otc unit. Too many hunters running wild. Been there, done that.

Boys are complicating things once again.
Same old song and dance
I am not exactly sure what you just wrote, but either way..........or anyway............If you choose to be a swag hunter/shooter that uses the newest ideas to give you an edge, that's your choice.
We all have our reasons to why we use what we do.
If choosing a patch thickness is too difficult for you, let's point out conical bullets....
What diameter is best for my gun? .500, .502, .503?? What weight? What conical do I need for heavy bone/frontal shots?
Then we have patches... .015, .018, .020"??? Well, let's throw in a fun twist.. those factory given specs often are BS and don't come close when you mic the thickness of the cloth.
But again, measuring patches, conical diameter, bullet designs for certain situations, this is literally the art that all shooters, no matter if it's centerline or muzzleloader must learn in order to be successful.
Now since better energy was brought up, let's say we're a newb, got an elk tag in our pocket. I have a 50cal inline and a 54cal sidelock... I have half a box of .530 round balls for my 54 and some store bought patches. My 50cal inline, I got a fantastic shooting load of 120gr t7 and 245gr powerbelts. That powerbelt will carry a lot more energy at longer distances! So that's the obvious choice.
Sadly, statements like that after often made after the hunter shoots at the animal and only finds a little blood or hair and swears he put it right in the boiler room!
Then that shooter comes online asking to be educated.
Boils down to every time... do your research, figure out what works best for you.
I am a pre 1840 shooter, so I don't throw on my buckskins during hunting season just to go and degrade my traditional experience to load up a conical bullet.
Is your porn name "Big Buckey Roundballs"?I am a pre 1840 shooter, so I don't throw on my buckskins during hunting season just to go and degrade my traditional experience to load up a conical bullet.
CuteIs your porn name "Big Buckey Roundballs"?
In short, I called bs on conicals being easier.I am not exactly sure what you just wrote, but either way..........or anyway............
I have been shooting sidelocks for 40 plus years. Heavy conicals are much easier to get dialed in and pack way more of a wallop and are capable of killing elk at 300 plus yds from a sidelock. I know of a handful of guys that have done it. So, I am sure there must be many others that I don't know of that have done it as well.
What I also like about the heavy conicals, is they often produce an exit hole.
Not only that, conicals have been around pre 1840. They were designed to give sidelocks better accuracy and distance.
I was by no means knocking roundballs. I was just stating some facts and my personal experiences.
Yeah, OK……if you say so.In short, I called bs on conicals being easier.
