Electric lawn mowers?

If you have a small yard and power outlet, consider corded. I have used the same greenworks corded mower for 14 years and it still works great. Yes the cord is annoying but for 15 minutes every two weeks its fine.

I bought a gas Honda 10 years ago when the kids got old enough to mow (my old one had zero safety features and was coming apart). But I’ve been super happy with my Ego
Chainsaw, pole chainsaw, blower, and trimmer. Will get the mower in the next year or so and be done with gas. I can make my own electricity. Can’t refine my own gas.

I tried the Stihl mower as I now have a lot vs a 5 acre yard. It took 2 batteries to mow. Not unacceptable, but it was double the cost of a Honda. Got the Honda and now I have a way to get rid of old gas.

I ended up buying a Ryobi 40V with 2 batteries. The self propel really is nice. It is definitely different than a gas power one but works pretty good.

I had a Stihl imow in my yard for about a year and a half. My yard literally never looked better. Once you understand them they work fantastic.

My neighbor has a Ryobi battery powered mower. I’ve borrowed it a time or two when my gas mower was giving me problems. I don’t understand why self propelled battery mowers are a thing. My neighbor’s mower was so lightweight it didn’t need self propel, and my yard is on a hill. It’s so easy to push, my neighbor’s wife uses it 90% of the time.

My next mower I get will be battery powered. Most of my battery powered hand tools are Makita, so I just need to decide if I’ll stick with Makita or go a different route for any yard equipment.

Do you need to be physically present keep it on task. I want to install one at a vacation property. No internet but there is commercial power.

No but its a good idea to be able to get to it if needed. If you get a storm and debris falls into the yard it could get stuck on it and you would need to remove it and let the machine go back about its way.

Besides that , most of the various brands all have mobil apps that you program the mower like you would a sprinkler system. You basically have them mow through the week to maintain the yard vs knocking the whole yard down all in one shot. The app will also alert you the status of the mower to know whats going on with it without having to be there. Its definitely worth looking into. Stihl and Husqavana are probably the two leading brands with this technology

It's a remote location no cell service, no internet when I am not there, starlink terminal when I am there, looking at models with cameras or RTK-GPS...not sure the tech is there yet, worx looks to be closest to solution.

I've had a Husqvarna Automower 450x for 5 years and it's amazing. If you went with a mower that has a buried boundary wire it would probably be just fine while you aren't there. You just wouldn't be able to be alerted if something happened while you are gone.

my neighbor let his lawn go feral this spring with dandelions and grass up to 12+ inches (which sucked cuz i had finally knocked back the weeds in my yard after spending the last two years diligently cleaning it up)...anyway he finally busted out the ryobi mower and trimmer. the mower couldn't cut it at all. it's been 5 days and he's finally down to a 1,000 sq. ft. section left. he eventually gave up on the mower and has just been using the trimmer but the guy must have recharged the battery over 10 times so far. i retired a smaller ryobi push mower for similar reasons. it worked decently if you stay on it and are cutting short/dry grass regularly, but battery couldn't get through my whole lawn in ideal conditions and would get zapped really fast if the grass was tall or wet at all.
