“Penetration” is dependent on so many factors, including bullet construction, velocity, tissue, etc.

These “tests” are no good because the clear gel is TERRIBLE for lower velocity impacts. Clear gel doesn’t represent tissue at low velocity. It is basically like a giant gummi bear. Gummi bears are nothing like human tissue (edit to add FBI gelatin is calibrated to simulate law enforcement needs, which are humans, but mammals have very similar tissue so we can draw correlations for hunting).

Even properly crafted FBI ballistic gelatin has limitations, but its water content gives it some semblance to tissue.

There is a Vortex video where cooper bullets don’t expand at a known velocity in clear gel but they do in actual ballistic gel. The Vortex guys get credit for discovering the issue and coming back with real gellatin.

It is tragic that the clear gel gets used by these psuedo scientific YouTubers to compare bullet performance.

Either they are grossly ignorant, lazy and don’t care, or they knowingly put out bad information.

It is sad that so many think these videos have any worth at all.

These quotes sorta gives it away, IMO, when he admits clear gel doesn’t simulate tissue AND fails to explain the limitations and THEN expects it to still give “valuable data” at extremes of performance:

While synthetic ballistics gelatin will not 100% reflect what a bullet will do to a human or animal, it provides us with valuable data and allows us to compare the performance of different bullets and different loads.

Then, after comparing them at the extreme of 1800 fps in admittedly ineffective clear gel, he reaches this bold conclusion:

You would expect this based on the fact that this [the ELDx] is a hunting bullet!

I’m a big ELDM fan in both the 6 and 6.5mm. I’m not concerned with penetration with the animals I hunt most (whitetail). I want expansion/fragmentation. The more stuff flying around in that cavity, the better. High shoulder shots on deer at any distances with some bone and bullet fragmentation equals dead right there. Every single time.
