At 49 and years of playing ball are taking their toll on my elbows especially while doing pull ups or lifting heavy. Thinking about some elbow sleeves any thoughts or recommendations? thnx

I have had significant issues both Medial & Lateral Epicondilitis in both elbows from years or rock climbing, so I feel your pain. I fired mine back up a few of years back when i got into Crossfit and started doing lots of PullUps/PushUps and poor clean technique. I did pick up some Elbow Sleeves from Mark Bell and they help keep your elbows warm and they feel good ... but as they won't solve the problem. The surgeons were gungho to carve my elbows up, but I opted not to go that route as my problems were symmetrical enough that it didn't make me believe that it would be more than a short term fix.

After resting them and ultimately doing injections in both to help get them under control, I found that it was a function of thoracic spine mobility and tight triceps. FWIW, my triceps felt 100% fine, but I found that mashing the heck out of them over a barbell along with voodoo flossing was like magic and I continue to do these things regularly and I am pain free for big volume of clean, pullups, pushups etc ...

FWIW ... I'm 53.

I wear some from time to time when my elbow flare up. They are about as effective as knee sleeves: feels good to have some compression, but definitely aren’t going to heal anything. Some people swear by taking a warm shower and then immediately Putting sleeves on before going to the gym.

My elbows do not tend to get negatively effected by heavy barbell training. Its usually the case that Mtn biking aggravates them and then I start to notice them getting into position for low bar squatting. Since I’ve been doing high volume Kettlebell work, pushups and pullups during quarantine, they have flared up pretty good. My experience is that it is usually a volume issue: too much Mtn biking, too much lifting volume etc.

Anyway, sleeves: won’t hurt, might help a little.

man that is a great call on the triceps deal and I have had tight psoas muscles cause me great back pain makes total sense! I will beat them up tonight and this weekend..thnx

Cool, I hope it helps you! Also, I picked up a psoa-rite for releasing the psoas and it's worth every penny - IMHO. Yes, there are other options and stretches, but this is super easy and worth it - IMHO.
